LAMP CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
Application filed-Mar. 19. 1902.)

UNITED STATES.
ATENT FFICE.
ANDREW THOMAS OSBRON, OF MALDEN, MISSOURI.
LAM P-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,514, dated November 25, 1902.
Application filed March 19, 1902. Serial No. 98,995. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may conce n.
Be it knownthat 1, ANDREW THOMAS Os- BRON, a citizen of the United States, residing may be employed either as a cap to prevent downdrafts through the chimney or as asupport upon which articles to be heated can be placed.
Other objects relate to certain structural details which afford simplicity, and consequently inexpensiveness, in its construction.
The preferred embodimentof the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification; but such changes maybe made from the structure shown and described as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the cap in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View through Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through the platform. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the under side of the platform, and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of one of the supporting leg-sections. v
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention a platform is provided comprising a central body portion 1 10, having an opening 11 therein and oppositely-disposed outstanding arms 12, which are preferably of spring metal. Secured to the under side of the platform-body are a pair of supporting leg-sections each consisting of a single wire bent to form outstanding spacing-loops 13, the terminals of said wire depending andbeing preferably disposed in divergent relation to constitute holding-legs 14, that engage within the upper end of a chimney. These sections are secured to the body by means of ears 15 and 16, the ears 15 being formed of lugs located at the opposite edges ofthe body 10, that are bent around the-in termediate portions of the leg-sections. The
cars 16 are made of the metal that is cut from the central portion of the body to form the central opening 11, said metal being bent about the legsections, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The ends of the arms 12 are provided with upstanding terminal lips 17,0ne of which has an outstanding thumb-piece 18. A cap 19, preferably of conical form, is arranged to be detachably secured over the platform, and to this end it is provided with seats or sockets 20, in which the lips 17 and 18 detachably interlock, as will be clearly seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
In use the device is supported upon the top of the chimney by inserting the holding-legs 14 within the same, said legs being preferably bendable, so that the device may be applied to different-sized tops. In this position the loops 13 willsupport the platform in spaced relation to the upper edge of the chimney, so that a free draft is obtained for the burner. In case the lamp is to be carried about outdoors or where there is a strong draft the cap 19 is secured in place upon the platform, and thus all downdraft in the chimney is prc- I vented, so that the flame will not be extinguished even in a comparatively high wind. Should it be desired to heat an articleas, for instance, a cup of waterthe cap is removed, whereupon the flat platform is exposed, which will form a suitable support for the cup, the upstanding lips serving to properly position the same. At the same time the loops are resilient, so that they will give should a comparatively heavy body he carelessly placed upon the platform, thus protecting the chimney from injury. Curling-irons may also be heated by passing them through the central opening, the outstanding arms serving to protect the handles against the heat. It has also been found that bread may be nicely toasted by being placed directly upon the platform, the heat being easily regulated by raising or lowering the wick: of the lamp.
It will therefore be seen that a simple attachment is provided which will permit an ordinary hand-lamp being carried about through strong drafts or currents of air without danger of extinguishment. Furthermore, the attachment is extremely useful in a sick- IOO room or an emergency where it may become necessary or extremely desirable to heat wa ter or the like in a short time.
. From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit orsacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a fiat platform, of outstanding yielding supporting-loops depending from the platform and arranged to rest upon the upper end of a lamp-chimney to support the platform in spaced relation above the same, spring-arms attached at their inner ends to the platform and projecting beyond the same between the loops, said arms having upturned lips at their outer free ends, and a cap detachably fitted over the platform and having its edges interlocked with the lips of the arms.
2. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a body portion, of depending lamp chimney-engaging legs attached to the body portion, separate springarms also attached to the body portion and projecting beyond the legs, and an imperforate cap having a detachable engagement with the arms and removably fitted ever the body portion, said arms being provided with separate upstanding and inwardly-turned lips that engage over the upper portions of the edges of the cap.
3. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a platform, of means for supporting the platform upon a lampchimney, outstanding spring-arms carried by the platform, said arms having their outer ends free and provided with upturned terminal lips, and a cap located over the platform and having peripheral socketsin which the lips of the arms engage.
4. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a platform-body having a central opening, and eyes located along the edges of the opening, of supporting leg-sections engaging in said eyes.
5. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a platform-body having a central opening, and eyes located along the edges of the opening, of wire sections having terminal depending legs, outstanding loops and intermediate portions engaging the eyes, outstanding spring-arms projecting from the platform, and a cap detachably interlocked with said arms.
6. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with a platform-body having a central opening, and eyes located along the edges of the opening, of wire sections having terminal depending legs, outstanding loops and intermediate portions engaging the eyes, and outstanding arms projecting from the platform.
7. In an attachment of the class described, the combination with the platform, of wire sections secured to the under side thereof, each section being composed ofa pair of loops, an intermediate connecting portion and depending legs at the lower ends of each loop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
