UNiTED STATES 'Arnivr FREDERICK ARZT, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
CANDLE-HOLDER FOR CHRISTMAS-TREES,
SP EGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,572, dated October 16, 1883.
5 vented a new and Improved Candle-Holder z fortGhristmas-Trees, of which the following is aspecificationf My invention is an improvement in the candleholder for which Letters Patent No. 214,868 were granted tome on the 29th of April, 1879; and it consists in arranging the spring lever or arm by whichthe candleholder is attached to the branches of the tree at right angle with the candle-h older, whereby in whatever position or direction the branches may be the candle supported by the holder can always be fixed in a perpendicular position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a front View of my improved candleholder attached to the branch of a tree. a Fig. II is a side view of the same. v
A. represents the top plate, provided with projecting prongs 13, between which the wax or other suitable candle is held fast. To the bottom of the plate A an arm, C, is securely fastened, near the lower end of which a similar arm, C, is hinged. A. coiled spring, is arranged between the fixed arm 0 and the movable arm 6', which may at the same time act as a hinge for the same to force the upper ends of these armstogether. Aflatspring, bent or doubled, may be arranged for the same purpose. The fixed arm (3 is attached at or nearly 35 at a right angle to the plate-holder A. The
Application tiled August 31, 18st}. (No model.)
lower ends, a n, of the arms G and O extend some distance below the hinge or the coiled spring D, against which the ends of the spring act, and to facilitate the operation of the movable arm 0. The inner edges of the upper part of the arms 0 and 0 may be serrated, to insure a firmgrip on the branches of the tree.
. To attach the holder to the branch, the ends n a are pressed together, whereby the upper ends of the arms are moved apart to allow the branch of the tree to be passed between the same, which will then be held tight, on account of the action of the spring D as soon-as pressure is removed from the ends a a.
It will be seen that by arranging the arms 0 O at right angle with the plate-holderAthe same may be attached so that the candle sup ported by said plate-holder will always stand upright or perpendicular in whatever position or direction the branch of r the tree may be, and can easily be changed or regulated, it by other articles attached to said branch the direction or position of the same should change thereby.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a candle-holder, A, the fixed arm 0, attached at right angle to said plate A, with hinged arm G and spring D, arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
FRED. ARZT.
