SGHUGH, of (Jincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and usefulImprovenientinLamp-Extinguishers,\vhich improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a side view of an Argand burner equipped with the extinguishing device depressed so as to permit the fiame to burn uninterrnptedly. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same burner, showing the extinguishingdevice .in position after flame has been extinguished.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective extinguisher for all forms o f coal-oil lamps.

Referring to the accompanyingdrawings, A represents the .wiek-tube of the 'Argand bnrner.

Near one side of the base is an arm or standard, B, projecting upward, the upper end of which is provided with a guide, U, to receive a Vertical rod, D.

The upper end of the rod D is hinged to a disk, E, at one side of it. This disk is preferably of even size with the diameter of the wiek-tube A; but it may be made larger, if

.desiretL The rod D passes through the base of the burner F, and has at its lower end a refor the flat wick-tubes; but it is obvious that either hoods or flat disks or plates may be used on either class of burners.

The operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoin g description. A simple direct upward movement of rod I) its own; weight or otherwise it comes over the lamp-wiek and extinguishes the fiame. A reverse and downward movement of the rod serves to withdraw the piece from the wiek.

I am aware it is not new, broadly, to provide. a wiek-tube with a cap or hood hinged to the tube and connected with a rod or handle, so that when it is turned overthe end of the wiek-tube the fiame will be extinguished, and I therefore disclaim this. I am not aware, however, that a disk or hood applicable alike for. Argand 'as well as the common burners, simply connected with the Operating rod or handle, but not hinged to the wiek-tube, has ever before been known or used.
