Description

L. H. PILGER. 'LAMP-EXTINGUI'SHER.
Patented Ian.9,1877.
ATTORNEYS.
NPETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
LEONARD H. PILGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,059, dated January 9, 1877; application filed December 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD H. PILGER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Lamp Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved lamp-extinguisher, and Fig. 2 an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an extinguishing attachment to lamp-burners, by which the light is positively extinguished whenever the burner is unscrewed from the bowl for filling, so as to preclude all possibility of accidents by explosion.
The invention consists of a fulcrumed lever and slide-rod at the under side of the burner, the lever extending below the collar of the bowl, to form contact with the same on detaching the burner, and raise thereby the slide-rod and a weighted extinguisher-tube sliding on wick-tube.
A guard-piece opposite the lever assists the working and reinserting of the lever into the bowl.
In the drawing, A represents a lamp-burner of the customary construction, and B an extinguisher tube, that slides on the wick-tube, and is weighted at the lower part for extinguishingthe flame automatically when the lamp is upset.
A lever, B of the sliding tube B, serves to raise the same at any time when it is desired to extinguish the flame, while a guard-piece, B prevents the detaching of tube B. The lower end of this sliding extinguisher-tube is brought in contact with a slide-rod, O, that passes through a perforation of the base of the burner into the lamp-bowl, being pivoted at the lower end to a lever, D, that is fulcrumed to the under side of the lamp-burner, and extended with its free arm sufficiently beyond the bottom circumference of the burner as to project under the collar of the bowl.
A guard-piece, E, is attached to the under side of the burner, at a point diametrically opposite to the lever D, and curved or inclined outwardly sufficiently to cause the positive contact of lever D with the bowl on unscrewing and detaching the burner for filling the same.
The contact of lever-arm and bowl produces the lowering of the arm and the raising of the slide-rod, which again raises the extinguishertube, and extinguishes thereby the light in positive and reliable manner.
An automatically-operating attachment is thus provided, which extinguishes the light even in case the person filling the lamp neglects to extinguish the flame before unscrewin g the burner. It forms thereby a safety device, that acts as a preventive against explosions and accidents, and forms, in connection with the weighted slide-tube, a reliable and very simple extinguishing device.
The guard-piece serves, in replacing the burner, as a rest for one finger, while the other finger bears on the lever to keep the same pressed down for admitting the convenient reinsertion of guard-piece and lever into the bowl. The weight of the slide-tube resets then the lever into position to be thrown into action whenever the lamp-bowl is to be refilled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The combination, with a sliding and Weighted extinguisher-tube of a lamp-burner, of a slide-rod and fulcrumed lever at the under side of the burner, said lever extending under the collar of the bowl, to work automatically the extinguishing-tube on detaching the burner from the bowl for filling, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a lamp-burner, of the fulcrumed lever D, extending under the collar of the bowl and actuating the extinguishing device, with a guard-piece, E, secured to the burner at a diametrically-opposite point, to produce reliable action of the same, substantially as described.
LEONARD H. PILGER.
