UNITED STATES MARTIN P. FLANDERS, OF AU SABLE FORKS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,225, dated December 12, 1876; application filed November 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN P. FLANDERS, of Au Sable Forks, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a lamp-burner with my improved extinguishing device, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved device for automatically extinguishing a lamp when the same is accidentally tilted over; and itconsists of a swinging cap, that is pivoted to the wick-tube and operated by a pivoted leverconnection, with a sliding and spring-acted weight encircling the wick-tube.
In the drawing, A represents the wick-tube, to the upper part of which a straight or concave cap, B, of suitable size, is pi oted, by means of downward-bent wings or lugs a.
A wire frame, 0, is connected to the swinging cap B at one side of the vertical axis of the burner, the frame being loosely pivoted thereto, and extended downward from the wings to a sliding weight, D, that encircles the wick-tube.
The weight D is rigidly secured to the lower ends of frame 0, and serves, on sliding upward on the wick-tube, to throw the cap over the wick, so as to extinguish the flame. A spring, D, bears with its free end on the under side of weight D, and assists the upward sliding of the same when the lamp is tilted over, and the wick-tube placed in horizontal position.
The leverage exerted by the sliding weight and wire frame on the cap swings the same over the wick-tube, and extinguishes thereby the flame without being obstructed by sticky coal and oil particles, as is frequently the case with the common sliding extinguishing-tubes in use.
A fulcrum-lever, F, of the burner bears on The combination of the pivoted cap or caps B, pivoted lever-frame O, and sliding and spring-acted weight D with the wick-tube A, all constructed and relatively arranged substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
