To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUs P. GIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LanternBurners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to lantern burners, and has for its object the construction and combination of a burner extinguishing mechanism in such a manner that while the lantern may be subjected to sudden, violent jars and may be swung around without oper ating the extinguishing mechanism, yet, in case the lantern is overturned, it instantly becomes operative to extinguish it.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view partially in elevation and partially in section of the base of a lantern embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of a portion of the mechanism. Fig. 4 is a view partially in elevation and partially in section of a modification thereof. Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of the same.
In these drawings A is the base of a lantern, B B the upright parts of the frame, C the lantern globe, and C the globe support, all of the usual and ordinary construction.
The burner has the ordinary wick-tube D, the wick raiser D and frame D D of the usual construction. The vent-tube is made of a loose plate d, adapted to slide up and down along the side of the wick-tube D, and on the top D of the frame, I pivot, in ears d d, the arms 6 e of an extinguisher cap E, the arms 6 e embracing the edges of the wick-tube D, and to the back of the vent-tube plate (1, I secure a cross-bar e which extends laterally under the arms 6 a so that the raising or lowering of the venttube plate (1 operates to raise or lower the extinguisher cap E, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. At one side of the lower part D of the burner frame I pivot a lever F provided on its longer arm with a weight F, and to the lower part of the vent-tube plate (1 I secure a cross-bar f, one end of which is looped around the lever F, so that the raising or lowering of the lever F operates to raise or lower the vent-tube plate (1 and the mechanism connected therewith. On the short arm of the lever F, I pivot a swinging pendant F and on the side of the lower part of the frame directly under the pendant F there is a projecting shelf ledge G with which the lower end of the pendant F is adapted to nearly contact when the lantern is in a vertical position, but which pendant F swings to one side of the ledge G when the lantern is tipped, so as to pass off of the ledge G, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and permit the lever F to operate. Around the bearing f 'of the lever F there is a spring f which operates on the lever F in opposition to the weight F.
In Figs. 3 & 4 of the drawings I show a structure in which all of its parts are the same as hereinbefore described, except that in place of the swinging pendant on the arm of the lever F, and the ledge or plate G on the burner-frame, I secure to the lever F a downwardly projecting point F and on the burner-frame I make a slotted shell G, the bottom of which is concaved so that the lowest point therein is directly under the point F on the lever F, and in this shell G, I place a ball H which normally rests directly under the point F, but which rolls to one side thereof whenever the lantern is tipped, so as to allow the end of the lever F to pass downward and operate the mechanism hereinbefore described.
