AXELL AJWEMMERGREN, OF GREAT BEND, KANSAS.
WICK-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed March 15,1906. Serial No. 306,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AxELL A. WEMMER- GREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Bend, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wick-Holding Attachments for Lamp -Burners; and I do declare the followin 'to be a full, clear, and exact description 0' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wick-holding attachments for lamp-burners.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment by means of which a wick will be firmly held against creeping or moving up wardly or downwardly between the burner.
A further obj eat is to provide means whereby one edge of the wick may be held while the opposite edge is raised or lowered, thus regulating the flame or light and causing the Wick to burn evenly. I
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp-burner, showing the application ofthe invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectionalview through the wick-tube, taken immediately above the wick-adjusting mechanism, showing in full lines the operative position of the attachment and in dotted lines the released or open position of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the wick-tube and the hollow plug of the burner; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a modified form of the attachment.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2,
and 3 of the drawings, 1 denotes the burner, which may be of the usual or any desired construction, provided with a wick-tube 2, said tube being here shown as secured in a hollow plug 3, in which is arranged the wick-adjusting mechanism 4 and by means of which the burner is attached to the lamp-body.
Arranged on the plug 3 is a pivot-plate 5, said plate having formed therein a slot 6, by means of which the same is slipped over the wick-tube, as shown, said plate being held on the plug 3 by a tight frictional engagement with the tube 2. Pivotally mounted on one end of the plate 5 is a pair of wick-holding ledles 8, formed thereon, the teeth or prongs 1O will be forced through their respective apertures in the wick-tube and through the wick, thereby firmly holding the same against up or down movement. If it should'be found that one edge of the wick was burnin higher than the opposite edge, one of the Ievers 7 may be closed and the teeth thereon engaged with one edge of the wick, thereby holding said edge, while the adjusting mechanism may be turned to move the opposite edge of the wick up or down to cause the same to burn evenly, as will be understood.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings the attachment is shown as consisting of but one lever 7, said lever being provided with two or more teeth or prongs 10 which are adapted to be projected' through alined apertures 11*, formed in the wick-tube, as shown. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 the single lever 7 a is pivoted directly to the top of the plug 3, thus dispensing with the pivot-plate 5, as shown in the first figures of the drawings,
From the foregoing description, takeni connection .with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without 4 requiring a more extended explanation.
Various chan es in the form ro ortion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lamp-burner, a wick-tube, a lever pivotally mounted upon one end of the wicktube and extending across the side of said wick-tube, prongs on the side of said lever to engage the wick at opposite sides near the edges and thereby hold the same against moving up or down in the wiok-tube, said prongs extending through perforations in said wick-tube, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp-burner, a Wick-tube provided with perforations in the sides thereof, levers pivotally mounted at one end of the wicktube and adapted to be brought into engagement with each side of the wick-tube, and teeth or prongs carried by said levers to pro ject through the perforations in said wicktube and into the wick at opposite sides thereof and near the outer edges, for the purpose set forth. 1
3. In a lamp -burner, levers pivotally mounted thereon, offset handles or fingerpieces formed on said levers, laterally-projecting teeth or prongs arranged on the inner edges of said levers to enter the wick-tube i from opposite sides and near the opposite edges of the tube when said levers are brought l together, and a pivot-plate adapted to be en- I gaged with said wick-tube to pivotally support said levers in. place, substantially as de F scribed. I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- I nesses. l
AXELL A. WEMMERGREN.
