Description

M. WAGNER.
Lamp-Extinguishers.
N.I52,44\, Patentedjune 23,1874.
'gm-m Y @ma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
MICHAEL VAGNER, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IMIDROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,441, dated June 23, 1374; application filed June 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, MICHAEL WAGNER, of Quincy, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following` is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvement in lamp-extinguishers, and especially to that class in which the iiame is extinguished by means of a vibrating weight. It consists in a weight suspended to the end of a rod secured to the burner and depending within the globe of the lamp. 0n the rod above the weight is provided a sliding spool, which, when the lamp is tipped, is forced up by the weight, the upper disk of the spool forcing upward a rod extending through the burner and having its upper end provided with a sliding clasp which, as it is raised, closes the extinguishingclipsy over the upper end of the wick-tube.
Figure 1 is a view showing the invention when the lamp is in a vertical position, the oil-fount being in section and the remainder of the figure an elevation. Fig. 2 is a View at right angles to Fig. 1 when the lamp is tipped, the oil-'ount being in' section and theremainder of the figure an elevation. Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of the under side ot' the arc a.
A, in the accompanying drawings, is a weight suspended so as to vibrate at the lower end of the rod B within the globe of the lamp C, the upper end of the rod being lirlnly secured to the lower part of the burner D. Above the weight A, upon the rod B, is placed the sliding spool E having the disks b d, the former of which rests upon the upper end of the weight A, the latter being but a short-dis tance below the lower end of the rod F. This arrangement is preferable, in order that the weight shall actuate the spool, and also that the spool shall not operate the rod F when the lamp is but slightly tipped. The rod F extends upward parallel to the rod B and through the burner D, its upper end being provided with the clasp H, which sustains the rod and partially incloses and slides upon the case I, placed about the wick-tube L and having hinged to its upper edge the clips M arranged'to unite over the wick-tube. The clasp H may be, as in the present instance, provided with the upright lianges c, the upper ends of which are curved or iared outward so as to facilitate the operation of closing the clips; also the case I may be dispensed with and the clips hinged directly to the wick-tube.
It is obvious that when the lamp is tipped so as to permit an efliux of the oil, the vibra tion of the weight will instantly force up the spool and rod, thus raising the clasp, closing the clips, and extinguishing the llame.
A convenient form of applyingthe invention to burners now in common use is shown in the present instance. Thus an arc of metal, a, having the rod B, provided with weight and spool, is tirmly secured to the under surface of the burner adjacent to the lower end ot' the wick-tube L, while the rod F, provided with the clasp H, is passed through the burner, the wick-tube being properly supplied with the extinguishing-clips. In case ot a circular wick tube a number of sinall clips may bei employed, which, when closed, form a circle above the wiclctube, which should be encolupassed by a circular clasp to operate the clips instead of a flat or rectangular one, as herein described.
What I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rlhe combination of a vibrating weight operating a sliding spool placed upon a rod in the globe of a lamp, and actuating a rod for closing the clips of an extinguishing device, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvements in lamp-extinguishers, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of May, 1874.
