MACKEY BUSCH, OF OLARKSVILLE, MISSOURI.
MECHANICAL LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,907, dated November 15, 1904.
Application filed March 31, 1904:.
To and whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MACKEY Boson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county ofPike and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of this invention isto provide a mechanical means preferably adapted for use in connection with ordinary oil -lamp burners for extinguishing the light mechanically without necessitating the inconvenient blowing out of the same, a common method at present employed.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 2 showing more clearly the connection of the operating-lever with the slidable sleeve upon the wick-tube. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken about on the lineYY of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the actuating-lever. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View bringing out more clearly the mounting of the extinguishing-plate upon the carriersleeve.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
As illustrated in the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to the common form of burner 1, the latter beingemployed usually upon kerosene-lamps or the like. Projected from the burner are the usual spring chimney-engaging arms 2, and I the wick of the burner is manipulated by means of the wickshaft 3, as will be readily understood. The wick is mounted in the wick-tube i, and the will appear more fully hereinafter.
Serial No. 200,964. (No model.)
wick-tube aforesaid has slidably mounted thereon a carrier in the form of a sleeve 5, which sleeve has mounted thereon the extinguishing device. The sleeve 5 is mounted for a verticalslidable movement of the wick-tube 4,.and the extinguishing device above mentioned comprises a plate 6, provided with spaced arms 7 which latter are pivotally supported, being journaled to lugs 8, projected from the sleeve 5. One of the spaced arms 7 of the pivoted plate 6 is provided with a weight 9, and the weight 9 is designed to automatically operate the plate 6 when this plate has been actuatedin a manner which 7 The arm 7 opposite to that which carries the weight 9, is provided with an integral extension 10, having the lower end portion thereof beveled, which latter extension is adapted to engage the upper portion of the perforated body of the burner in the operation of the device, as will be, more clearly set forth as the description proceeds.
To extinguish the flame after actuation of the carrier-sleeve 5, a lever 11 is utilized, which member is attached to the burner, being provided at its upper end with a handle 12. The inner endof the lever 11 is bifurcated to form spaced members 13, and a lug 14 is projected from the sleeve 5, said lug being engaged between the spaced members 13 of the lever 11. The lever is thus adapted to actuate the carrier-sleeve 5 vertically, a pivotal movement being imparted to the said lever to accomplish this. As the sleeve 5 is moved upwardly in the extinguishing operation,as soon as the upper portion of this sleeve has projected some distance above the wick and wick-tube the weight 9, carried by the extinguishing-plate 6, automatically throws the plate by a pivotal movement thereof into such a position as to close the upper open end of the said sleeve 5. hen the plate6 is thus actuated, the flame is quickly extinguished, as will be clearly seen. Thelever 11 is restored to its normal position by means of a spring 15, which latter engages a projection 16, extended fromthe bifurcated endportion of the lever 11, and this spring serves to normally hold the sleeve 5 in its lowermost position,
with the extinguishing-plate 6 in an approximately vertical position. The upper portion of the sleeve 5 is cut away on an incline, so as to enable the weight 9 to throw the plate 6 firmly against the sleeve to extinguish the flame. The extension 10 of the arm 7 of the extinguishing-plate by engagement with the body-of the burner 1 on downward movement of the sleeve 5 after the flame has been extinguished serves to impart a pivotal movement to the plate 6, so as to throw the latter into an approximately vertical position when the sleeve 5 is thrown into its normal posi tion under the action of the spring 15.
The structural parts of the device are comparatively simple and may be very cheaply manufactured and applied to any of the ordinary lamp-burners now in use, and it will be understood that the detail form of the parts may be modified in accordance with the spirit of the invention, as hereinbel ore set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination of a lamp-burner having a Wick-tube, a carrier-sleeve slidably mounted upon the Wick-tube, an extinguishing-plate pivoted to the upper portion of the carriersleeve, spaced arms projected from one side of the extinguishing-plate, a weight carried by one of said spaced arms, an engaging extension projected from the other of said spaced arms and cooperating with the upper portion of the lamp-burner to actuate the extinguishing-plate, an actuating-lever pivoted to the burner and having its inner ends bifurcated to form spaced members, a projection extended from the carrier-sleeve and engaged by the spaced members of the lever aforesaid, and a spring cooperating with the lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
