LAM P-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,584, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed March 26, 1888.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER E. Mc- LEOD, of Hallock, in the county of Kittson and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Extinguisher, of which the'following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lamp-extinguisher which is very simple and durable in construction and very effective in operation.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of theimprove-l ment as applied to a burner, shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the improvement as applied and l in its uppermost position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improvement in an open position.
The burner A, of any approved construction, is provided with the usual wick-tube, B, onto the upper end of which is fitted to slide a sleeve, 0, provided on each end with a pin, D,projecting through an aperture in the ends of a U-shaped plate, E. The extreme ends of the plate E are pivotally connected at F with posts or brackets G, secured to the top plate, H, of the burner A. On the projecting ends of the pins D are pivoted the ends of a forked rod, I, extending downwardly and through the top plate, H, to the outside of the burner A.
The operation is .as follows: When the lamp-extinguisher is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the wick is burning, then the upper end of the sleeve 0 is below the upper end of the wick-tube B, and the middle part of the U-shaped plate E hangs to one side of the sleeve 0. ter, acting on the pins D, pushes the sleeve 0 upward, and at the same time causes an upward swinging motion of the U-shaped plate E, the latter turning on its pivots at F. The sleeve C moves with its upper end above the upper end of the'wick-tube B, and then the U-shaped plate E has assumed a vertical position and its middle part rests on top of the sleeve 0, and consequently closes the same, thereby completely inclosing the upper end of the burning wick, so that all air for combustion is shut off, and the light is consequently extinguished. It will be seen that the sleeve 0 and plate E do not come in contact with the wick, and hence do not damage the same, as is so frequently done in lampextinguishers now in use. As soon as the operator releases his pressure on the rod 1, then the sleeve 0, the plate E, and rod I drop down to their former position; or the operator may exert a slight downward pull on the rod I to accomplish the same result.
The extinguisher may be left in a closed position, so as to prevent the evaporation of the oil, at the same time rendering the lamp odorless when not in use.
It will further be seen that when the light is extinguished no gas or smoke can emanate from the wick and pass into the room in which the lamp is kept.

The combinatiomwith the burner A, provided with the bracket G, of the sleeve 0, fitting loosely on the wick-tube and provided with the pins D, the U-shaped plate E, apertured to receive the pins D and having its ends pivoted to the bracket G, and the forked rod I, pivoted on the pins D and extending downward through the top plate of the burner, substantially as herein shown and described.
