Description

Wtqessea W. J. HILLS. LAMP EXTINGUISHER.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.2,1911.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. HILLS, OF WATERFORD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO L. W. HILLS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed December 2, 1911. Serial No. 663,577.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J I-IILLs, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- VVaterford, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates generally to improvements in slotted dome oil lamp burners, and more particularly seeks to provide an improved construction thereof, including in its make-up a valve or muffler device, that will become automatically operative to extinguish the flame whenever the lamp is tilted during a partial or total upsetting of the same, whereby to prevent the ignition of any of the oil that might flow from the bowl or reservoir.
In its more complete nature this invention comprehends in a burner of the type stated, a slotted, dome shaped plate, pivoted adjacent to the lower ends of the slot therein and in the domecap of the burner to the inner or under side of the dome-cap of the lamp burner, said dome shaped plate being provided with counter-weights secured thereto below said pivots, of suflicient gravity to maintain the slotted portion of said dome-shaped plate in a perfectly perpendicular position so that the slot therein will co-incide with the slot in the dome-cap of the lamp burner when the lamp is in a perpendicular position, and which weights will maintain said slotted plate in a perpendicular position when the lamp is tilted partially or completely over thereby closing the slot in the dome-cap and effectually extinguishing the flame before oil is spilled out of the lamp, and when the lamp is again put in an upright position said slotted dome-shaped plate will automatically open the slot in the dome-cap of the burner.
The features of my invent-ion are hereinafter set forth and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1. is a side view of a lamp burner in elevation, with the side of the dome-cap thereof broken away showing the extinguishing mechanism. Fig. 2. is a vertical section of the dome-cap tilted to the left. Fig. 3. is a like view of the same showing said cap tilted to the right.
In these drawings A indicates the body of an ordinary lamp burner; A indicates the wick-tube thereof; B indicates the wick adjusting mechanism thereof; and G indicates the dome-cap thereof having therein a flame-slot C, all of which is of usual construction. Within this dome-cap G, I pivot a dome-shaped plate D, having therein a slot D adapted to coincide with the slot- C in the dome-cap C, upon pivots of passing through said plate D and dome-cap C adjacent to each end of the slots C and D therein, and below each of the pivots (Z I secure on said slotted dome-shaped plate a counter weight D providing thereby sufficient counter balance to maintain the slot D in the plate D in a perpendicular position notwithstanding the cap C may be tilted to the right or left, as is fully shown in Figs. 2 and 8. It will be observed from the drawings and the foregoing description that the slotted dome-shaped plate D will automatically close the slot C in the cap C should the lamp be tipped over, and that said plate will likewise open said slot when the lamp is again placed in upright position.
From the foregoing description the construction and operatlon of my invention are so obvious that further description is deemed unnecessary.
Therefore having described my invention so as to enable others to utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is;
1. The combination in a lamp burner of a dome-cap having a flame slot therein, a dome-shaped plate having a flame slot therein pivoted within said dome-cap adapted to close the slot in said dome-cap when said lamp burner is tipped over, and a counterweight secured on said dome-shaped plate adapted to automatically maintain the flame-slot therein in a perpendicular position, substantially as and for the purpose 105 set forth.
2. The combination in a lamp burner of a dome-cap C having a flame-slot C therein, a dome-shaped plate D having a flame-slot D therein, secured within said dome-cap by means of pivots 05 passing through said Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
plates at each side of the burner adjacent to In testimony whereof I aflix my signaeaoh end of said flame-slot adapted to close ture, in presence of two Witnesses. said slot When the lamp-burner is tipped over, and counter-Weights D secured on ILLIAM IULLS' said dome-shaped plate below the pivots d, Witnesses:
substantially as and for the purpose set P. V. GIFFORD,
forth. H. M. STURGEON.
