Be it known that I, GEORGE KERR, residing at Dallas, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of
tilted during a partial or total upsetting of I the same, whereby to prevent the ignition of any of the oil that might flow from the bowl or reservoir.
My present invention in its more specific nature embodies an improved construction of the burner and extinguisher devices broadly disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 281,488, filed October 8, 1905, and allowed November 27, 1905 and it seeks to provide a simplified arrangement of the extinguishing means, whereby the burner withtheextinguishing devices can be the more economically manufactured and whereby the action of the muffler or extinguishing valves or plates will be rendered positive without the employment of special and delicatelymounted means on each plate for interlocking with the slot in the burner-dome when the plates automatically swing over thedomeslot during a tilting or dropping action of the lamp.
My present invention in its generic nature comprehends a burner of the type referred to and means in the nature of a plate shaped to swing over the dome-slot, pivotally mounted on the said dome in such manner so it will frictionally en age with the dome after it is swung over the dome-slot, thereby automatically locking itself to its slot-closing position.
In its more complete nature my present invention comprehends in a burner of the type stated a pair of oppositely-disposed plates, each independently hinged on the outside of the dome to automatically swing over the dome-slot when the lamp is tipped in either direction, the slotted dome being so shaped and the plates pivotally mounted on said dome in such manner that as either of said plates is swung over the slot in the dome it will become frictionally interlocked with the dome member and remain to its slot closing position.
In its details of construction my present invention embodies certain features, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, specifically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an oil-lamp with my improved construction of burner applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lamp in the act-of tipping over and illustrating the manner in which my improved extinguishing devices act. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the burner tipped in a direction opposite to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the slot ted dome or crown portion-0f the burner with the extinguishing-plates at their open or normal position. Fig. 5 is a plan view of .the same. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section thereof on the line 6 6 on Fig. 7. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 7 7 on Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic transverse section of the slotted dome member and the pivoted plates, illustrating the correlative curvature and pivotal connection of the plates and the curvature of the dome member. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the muflier or extinguisher plates.
In the drawings the lamp 1 may be ofany of the ordinary types of oil-lamp, and the burner B in its general construction is also of the usual type, the only special or new feature of construction in my form of burner be ing that the slotted dome b has its upper or crown portion of substantially semicircular shape in transverse direction, the curvature in the form shown being on an are having the point as as the center. The semicircular portion of the dome may extend the full width of the dome-body; but to effect the results desired it need. extend only to the raised pro jections b I) at opposite sides of the slot W, from which points the dome-body may have any desired ornamental shape.
In the present form of my invention I use two muffler-plates or valve members. In the present arrangement the plates 1 1 have a special curvature with respect to the curvature of the dome. Each plate has pendent apertured ears 1 1 for engaging the screw studs or pintles 2 2*, that project from the dome member I) in the longitudinal planeof the dome-slot and which are arranged eccentrically with respect to the curvature of the IIO "away from the slot b to the normal position said plates will swing freely and out of contact with the crown portion of the dome and with a space between the plates and the dome greater-than the thickness of the plates 1* 1 The plates are held to their normal or dropped position (away from the slot 6 by reason of their lower edges resting on the projections b b, and by reason of the shape of the plates and the manner in which the plates are pivotally connected to the dome member b they automatically retain their normal or open position under the ordinary handling of the lamp.
So far as described it will be readily apparent that the plates 1" and 1 by their own weight are maintained at their open or normal position. By pivotally connecting the plates as stated and curving them in transverse direction on an arc to provide for space between the plates and the slotted crown allows for either of the plates swinging over the slot when the lamp is tipped in either direction, it being understood that when the plate at one side drops over the slot it has free movement under the other plate by reason of the space between the other plate and the slotted dome. Furthermore, by reason of the curve of the plates being on an arc curvature with the curve of the crown portion of the dome when either of said plates is swung over the slot the front and rear edges of the plate will snugly engage the dome-top, and thereby effect a positive closure of the dome slot at both edges thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1-. A lamp-burner having an extinguisher which comprises a plate shaped to swing over the flame-slot, said plate being pivotally mounted on the burner, whereby to frictionally engage the burner-body when swung over the slot therein, for the purposes described.
2. In a lamp-burner of the character described, the combination with the slotted dome; of a pair of oppositely-disposed plates, each independently hinged on the outside of the dome whereby either of said. plates is adapted to automatically swing over the dome-slot when the lamp is tipped in either direction, each plate being shaped to frictionally engage the dome when swung over the slot therein.
3. Ina lamp-burner of the character described, a pair of oppositely-disposed plates pivotally mounted onthe slotted dome portion, either of said plates being adapted to close over the dome-slot when the lamp is tipped in either direction and shaped to frictionally interlock with the said dome when they reach their slot-closing position.
4. In a lamp-burner of the character described, in combination with a slotted dome, the crown of which is curved on the arc of the circle, a pair of plates curved on an arc concentric with the dome-crown, means for pivotally mountingsaid plates on the dome.
whereby to freely swing to their down or normal position and out of contact and to frictionally engage the dome when swung in the other direction to close over the dome-slot, each plate being eccentric to the curvature of the dome, means on the dome for loosely susv taining the plates at their open or normal position, the pivotal connection of the plates being such that the plates are held from the crown when at their normal position, and whereby as either plate is swung over the crown-slot it will pass under the opposite plate and move into frictional engagement with the crown as set forth.
5. In a burner of the character-described, an extinguishing means comprising a pair of oppositely-disposed plates shaped to swing over the flame-slot in the burner-dome, means for pivotally mounting said plates on the said dome whereby either of said plates will move 1 over the slot in the dome and under the other plate when the lamp is turned, each plate having a portion to frictionally interlock with.

open position, being held out of contact with the slotted dome, means projected from the dome for sustaining the plates at their normal position, the pivotal connection of the said plates to the dome being such that when either of the said plates is swung over the slot in the dome, it will frictionally engage with the dome and be thereby held to its closed position.
