LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,743, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed October 11, 1888. Serial No. 287,803. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. BRO WN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamp-extinguishers.
In the construction of lamp-extinguishers as heretofore proposed weights have been employed in numerous ways for causing a cap or plate to be thrown over the flame when the lamp is overturned. With such constructions the mounting and pivoting of the cap requires considerable space in the burner and presents a clumsy appearance.
It is the object of my present invention to produce .a safety-lamp in which the flame will be extinguished before the contained oil can be ignited in case the lamp is upset or broken.
A further object is to provide mechanism whereby the light may be extinguished from the outside, and thus obviate the necessity of blowing out the light.
A further object is to so construct the lampextinguisher that the operating parts shall be hid from view.
A further object is to provide a lamp-extinguisher by means of which the light will be extinguished if the lamp should be overturned in any direction.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and peculiar combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of aburner, partly in section, showing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
A indicates a burner-frame carrying a series of curved spring-arms, B, for the support of the lamp-chimney. Secured to and extending downwardlyfrom the frame A is a bracket, C, having a lower screw-threaded portion, a, to be screwed into the lamp-body, and a central elongated perforation for the reception of the wick-tube, b, which extends upwardly through the perforated diaphragm of the frame A. A shaft, 0, is journaled in the bracket C, and carries at a point between its ends a spur-Wheel, d, which projects slightly through the perforation in the wick-tube to engage the wick passing through said tube, as usual.
Hinged to the frame A is the cone D, provided at the side opposite the hinge with a spring-catch, 6, adapted to pass through a perforation made in the frame A. The cone D is made in two parts, f f, each part being cut away at its upper extremity to produce an elongated slot, f between the two sections for the accommodation of the flame on the wick. The part f of the cone D is made semicircular and provided at its lower extremities with perforated lugs f by which it is pivotally connected to the part f of cone D. A rod, g, extends through the pivoted section f parallel with the wick-tube at or near the center of said sections and fixed at its ends to the walls of the section f for a purpose explained farther on.
Secured to the bottom of the bracket C is a downwardly-projecting arm, h, having an eye, h, at its free end for the reception of the hook h at the upper extremity of a rod, 1', the connection between the arm h and rod ibeing sufficiently loose to permit said rod to have a universal movement. The rod t carries a weight, 1', at its lower extremity, and near its upper end a cup-shaped block, j, having an annular flange at its top. Aplate, 76, secured i within the bracket C in close proximity to the wick-tube, and, extending up through the diaphragm A, serves as a guide for a sliding plate, Z. The upper extremity of this platel is bent outwardly at right angles to produce a lip, 1, adapted to engage the fixed rod 9 of the pivoted section f of the cone D when the sliding plate is raised. The lower end of the sliding platel is provided with a rigidly secured cupshaped block, 0%, having a flange, m. The block m is provided with a perforation for the passage of the arm 71, upon which it is adapted to have asliding movement. The blocks j m are so arranged that their flanged faces will meet when the parts are in their normal positions, and the joint between the arm 71, and rod 1' covered by said blocks. 5 It will be seen that an upward movement of the sliding plate Z will cause its integral lip Z to engage the fixed rod g of the section f of cone D and cause said section to turn on its pivots and close the opening f in the burner-cone, and that when the section f is released by the plate Z said section will return to its normal position by gravity. It will be further seen that if the lamp should be overturned the weighted rod 2' will swing on its connection with the arm 72v and force the block "In and attached sliding plate upwardly and cause the movement of the pivoted section f, above described, and thus extinguish the light.
A perforated lug, 01, projects from the bracket O and acts as a support fora lever, o, pivoted thereto at or near its center. The lever is furnished near its inner end with a pin projecting at right angles thereto, and pivoted at its opposite end to the sliding plate Z, a slot, q, being made in the guide-plate to permit the pin 19 to have a vertical movement with the sliding plate 7. The levero projects somewhat beyond the frame A, and is provided with a thumb-piece, '2", by which to operate it. By providing the lever 0 and c011- necting it with the sliding plate I, as above described, the pivoted portion f of the cone 1) may be made to turn on its pivot and cause the opening f to be closed, and thus extinguish the light, thereby obviating the necessity of blowing the light out.
By constructing a lamp-extinguisher as above set forth the working parts will be hid from view, its operation will be sure and effective, and the use of pivoted plates on the exterior of the burner-cone obviated.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a burner-frame and a cone made in two sections, one section thereof being pivoted to the other section, of
a sliding plate for operating the pivoted section of the cone, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a burner-frame, of a cone made in two sections, one section pivoted on the other, a sliding plate to operate the pivoted section, a block on the sliding plate, and a rod attached to a fixed arm by a universal joint, said rod carrying a block at one end and a weight at the other, SllllSlJtl-lltially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a bu rner-frame, of a cone made in two sections, one section pivoted on the other, a sliding plate to operate the pivoted section, a guide-plate for the sliding plate, a lip at one end of the sliding plate and a block at the other end, a fixed arm, a rod pivoted to the fixed arm by a universal joint, and a block at one end of said rod and a weight at the other end, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a burner-frame, of a cone made in two sections, one section pivoted to the other, a rod fixed to the pivoted section, a sliding plate having a lip to engage said fixed rod, and a block at the lower end or said rod, fixed arm, a rod connected to the fixed arm bya universal joint, a weight at the lower end of said pivoted rod, and a block at the upper end thereof, the blocks on the slid: ing plate and pivoted rod being made cupshaped to receive the universal joint, and having annular flanges at their meeting faces, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a burner-frame, of a cone made in two sections, one section pivoted to the other, a rod fixed to the pivoted section, a sliding plate to engage said fixed rod, and a pivoted lever attached at one end to the sliding plate, whereby the pivoted section may be made to turn and close the opening in the burner, substantially as set forth.
