LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12,1912.
Application filed March 6, 1912. Serial No. 682,036.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Ismonn GREENWALD and JosErH BLAUSTEIN, residing at Pittsburgh, and Monnrs Z. "Wnrss and MAX SEL- Kovrrs, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp extinguishers, and more particularly to that type of lamp having a burner provided with a flat wick and has for its object to provide within the burner means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for snuffing or extinguishing the flame of a wick when the lamp is accidentally tilted or upset thereby overcoming the liability of conflagrations or explosions.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a lamp extinguishing means carried within the lamp burner and which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient and quick in its action, readily positioned within the burner and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a burner showing the adaptation therewith of an extinguishing device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, broken away showing the extinguishing device in an inoperative position and with the burner upright, Fig. 3 is a view of the burner tilt-r ed, the burner being broken away and the extinguishing device being illustrated in 0perative position, Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective, illustrating one of the extinguishing shutters, and Fig. 5 is a detail in perspective, illustrating the operating means for the extinguishing shutters.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 6 de' notes a burner body having a casing 7 mounted thereon provided at its top with a transverse slot 8 for the passage of the flame. The burner body carries a wick tube 9 provided with a wick 10. At each end of the wick tube 9 a support 11 is provided which is wider than the wick tube 9. Pivotally connected to the upper ends of the support 11 are the lower ends 12 of a pair of extinguishing shutters. These latter are designated by the reference characters 13 and 14 and the lower ends thereof are geared together, as at 15 so that when the shutter 14 is operated the shutter 13 will be shifted therewith and by such an arrangement the shutters will be moved toward each other and over the top of the wick tube to snuff or extinguish the flame. The pivots for the lower ends of the shutters are indicated by the reference character 16. The shutter 14 centrally thereof has a depending arm 17 which terminates in an angular-1y shaped bifurcated extension 18 for a function to be presently referred to.
Means are arranged within the burner body 6 and the casing 7 for shifting the shutter 14 when the lamp tilts in either direction and said means comprises a shutter actuating member including a body portion 19 having a centrally disposed opening 20. Depending from one end of the body portion 19 is an arm 21 having each of its edges notched, as at 23, whereby the said arm 21 is 1 mounted upon the bifurcated extension 18 and the shutter 14 coupled to the actuating member. The other end of the body portion 19 has a depending curved arm 24 of greater length than the arm 21 and which is hinged, as at 25 to the burner body 6. Extending into the casing 7 and having its lower ends fixed, as at 26 to the burner body 6 is an arcuate support 27 having a depending eye 28 centrally thereof, said eye being normally positioned over the opening 20 in the body portion 19. Loosely connected to the eye 28 is a suspension member 29 which extends through the opening 20 and has attached to its lower end a weight 30 and intermediate its ends, a disk 31. The suspension member means for the actuating means.
It is obvious from the foregoing construction and arrangement of parts for actuating the shutter lt that when the lamp is tilted in either direction, the weight 30 will move therewith carrying the suspension member in the same direction, the latter, as the disk 81 is fitted thereon, will engage with the body portion 19 of the actuating member and shift the shutter 14, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. The shifting of the shutter lt will cause the moving of the shutter 13. When the shutter 14: is shifted by the disk 31 both shutters will be moved over the wick tube, due to the fact that the lower ends of the shutters are geared together.
' What we claim is 1. A lamp extinguishing device comprising the combination with a lamp burner, of a pair of shutters capable of being shifted over the wick tube to snuff or extinguish the flame, an actuating member hinged at one end to said burner and shiftably connected at its other end to one of said shutters and capable of actuating the shutter to extinguishing position when said member is shifted, a support within said burner, and a freely movable operating means suspended from said support and capable when the lamp is tilted to engage said actuating member to shift it to actuate the shutter, said shutters geared together whereby they will move simultaneously.
2. A lamp extinguishing device comprising a combination with a lamp burner, of a pair of shutters arranged within said burner and geared together and adapted to be shifted over the wick tube to extinguish the flame, an actuating member hinged to said burner and engaging one of said shutters for shifting it, thereby causing the simultaneous 40 operation of both shutters, and operating means for said member, said operating means freely suspended in said burner and extending through said member and capable when the lamp is tilted to engage the memher to operate causing thereby the actuation of the shutter.
3. A lamp extinguishing device compris ing the combination with a lamp burner, of a pair of shutters geared together and adapted when operated to extend over the wick tube to extinguish the flame, an actuating member hinged to said burner and slidably connected to one of said shutters for actuating the latter causing thereby the simultaneous operation of both shutters, and operating means for said member freely suspended in said burner, said means extending through said member and including a disk for engagement with the member to shift it when the lamp is tilted causing thereby the operation of the shutters to extinguish the flame.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
