LAMP-EXTING'UISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed May 14, 1910. Serial No. 561,340.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, (1) ISIDOR GREEN- WALD, (2) JOSEPH BLAUSTEIN, (3) MORRIS Z. WEISS, and (4) MAX SELxovITs, (1) a subject of the King of Hungary, (2), (3), and (4) citizens of the United States of America, residing at (1) and (2) Pittsburg, (3) and (4) McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp extinguishers and more particularly to that type of lamp having a burner provided with a fiat wick.
The objects of our invention are to provide a burner with positive and reliable means for snufling or extinguishing the flame of a wick when the lamp is accidentally tilted or upset, and to furnish a burner with shutters that will be automatically closed when the lamp is tilted, thereby preventing explosions, fire and destruction of property and lives.
Further objects of our invention are to provide a lamp extinguisher that can be used in connection with various types of flat wick burners, and to accomplish the above results by a burner that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient as a safety device for lamps.
The above objects are attained by a structure that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, partly in side elevation of a burner in accordance with our invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a portion of the burner in front elevation, Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the burner, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a burner body adapted to be detachably connected to a lamp (not shown). This body is provided with a wick guide 2 for a wick 3, said wick being adjusted in the guide 2 by the ordinary and well known means, as a toothed wheel 4, a shaft 5 and a wheel 6. The wick guide 2 extends above the body 1 and one of the fiat sides thereof is provided with a vertical rib 7 This rib serves as a guide for a channel shaped actuating member'S extending upwardly through the burner body 1, the lower end of said body having a lateral apertured lug 9 adapted to normally restupon the head 10 of a rod 11, said rod having the upper end thereof provided with a hook 12 that extends through the lug 9 and is connected to an eyelet 13, carried by a transverse rod 14 arranged in the lower end of the burner body 1. The lower end of the rod 11 is provided with a weight 15 adapted to normally retain the rod 11 in a vertical position.
The burner body 1 at the ends of the wick guide 2 is provided with upwardly extendmg lugs 16 and 17. Pivotally connected to these lugs by pins 18 are the depending arms 19 of shutters 20 and 21, each shutter comprising a side wall 22 and a top wall 23, these walls being shaped whereby when the shutters are closed the top walls 23 thereof will extend over the upper end of the wick guide 2 and snuff or extinguish the flame of the wick 3. The depending arm 19 of the shutter 21 at one side thereof is provided with an extension 24 having an outwardly extending pin 25. This pin is adapted to extend into a slot 26 formed in an extension 27 of the arm 19 of the shutter 20, whereby when one of said shutters is moved the other shutter will move in unison therewith. The arm 19 of the shutter 21 is provided with a curved lever 28 adapted to engage a pin 29 carried by the upper end of the actuating member 8.
With the lamp in an upright position, the weight 15 of the rod 11 normally holds said rod in a vertical position, and the shutters 20 and 21 remain open by gravity, as best shown in Fig. 2, with the lever 2S of the shutter 21 resting upon the pin 29 of the actuating member 8. Then thelamp is accidentally tilted or upset, the weighted rod 11 swings by gravity and causes one edge of the head 10 to elevate the apertured lug 9 at the lower end of the actuating member 8 and as this member is guided by the rib 7 the member will be elevated. An elevation of the member 8 raises the pin 29 and the outer end of the lever 28, such a movement of the lever 28 swinging the shutter 21 to a closed position and as this shutter is connected to the shutter 20, both of said shutters will be moved in unison to snuff or extinguish the flame of the wick 3. When the lamp is again placed in an upright or vertical position, the shutters 20 and 21 will open by gravity ELIHIPGllHlt of the wick 3 being again lighted.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the extinguisher simply consists of cooperating shutters, an actuating member to move said shutters, and a suspended weighted rod for moving said actuating member.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is
1. In a lamp extinguisher, the combination with a burner body, and a wick guide carried thereby, said guide provided with a rib, of cooperating shutters pivotally-mounted adjacent to said guide and adapted to inclose the upper end thereof, one of said shutters having a slotted extension, a pin carried by the other of said shutters and projecting in said slotted extension whereby said shutters are caused to close simultaneously when one is actuated, a lever carried by one of said shutters, an actuating member movably mounted upon said rib and adapted to move the lever when said member is shifted, and a weighted rod suspended from said burner body and adapted to elevate the actuating member.
2. In a lamp extinguisher, the combination with a burner body and a wick guide carried thereby, of cooperating shutters pivotally mounted adjacent to said guide and adapted to close the upper end thereof, each of said shutters provided with an extension, one of said extensions being slotted and the other provided with a pin, said pin projecting in the slotwhereby the shutters are caused to close simultaneously when one of the shutters is actuated, a curved lever projecting from one of said extensions, and an actuating member movably mounted upon said wick guide for actuating the lever when said member is shifted, and a weighted rod suspended from said burner body and adapted when shifted to move said member.
3. In a lamp extinguisher, the combination with a burner body and a wick guide carried thereby, said guide provided with a rib, of cooperating shutters pivotally-mounted adjacent to said guide and adapted to inclose the upper end thereof, one of said shutters having a slotted extension, a pin carried by the other of said shutters and projecting in said slotted extension whereby said shutters are caused to close simultaneously when one is actuated, a lever carried by one of said shutters, an actuating member movably mounted upon said rib and adapted to move the lever when said member is shifted, said actuating member having its lower end provided with a right-angularly disposed portion, a weighted rod extending through said right-angularly disposed portion and provided with a head engaging with said portion for shifting the actuating member when the weighted rod is moved, and means for pivotally connecting said rod at a point above the head to the burner body.
4. In a lamp extinguisher, the combination with a burner body and a wick guide carried thereby, of cooperating shutters pivotally mounted adjacent to said guide and adapted to close the upper end thereof, each of said shutters provided with an extension, one of said extensions being slotted and the other provided with a pin, said pin projecting in the slot whereby the shutters are caused to close simultaneously when one of the shutters is actuated, a curved lever proj ecting from one of said extensions, an actuating member movably mounted upon said wick guide for actuating the lever when said member is shifted, said actuating member having its lower end provided with a right-angularly disposed portion, aweighted rod extending through said right-angularly disposed portion and provided with a head engaging with said portion for shifting the actuating member when the weighted .rod is moved, and means for pivotally connecting said rod at a point above the head to the burner body,
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
