LAMP-BURNER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HExnY Nonnnn'r BER- NIER, a British subject, residing at Iroquois Falls, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners for lamps or lanterns and has for its object the provision of a burner which is so constructcd that in the event the lamp or lantern is upset or is unduly tilted, the flame will be automatically extinguished whereby danger of fire from this very common cause will be prevented and whereby the use and handling of lamps will be made much safer.
An important object is the provision of a burner of this character which may be manually operated to extinguish the flame in addition to the automatic operation.
Another object is the provision of a burner of this character which is so constructed that it will not be too sensitive, that is so that it may be tilted within reasonable limits as is unavoidable in carrying, without the flame being extinguished. 7
An additional object is the provision of a burner of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objectsand advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp burner constructed in accordance with my invention, the cap of the burner being shown as swung into open position,

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the burner tilted and one extinguisher moved to cover the flame, and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view showing the bottom portion of the burner in plan.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates the bottom portion of a lamp burner of ordinary construction, and B designates the upper portion. The bottom portion A carries the usual wick Specification of Letters Patent.

guide C and adjusting stem D and is connected with the upper portion B by the usual arms E which are secured thereto in any preferred manner. Hinged upon the upper portion B, as shown at F, is a burner cover G. All of the above described parts are ordinary and no novelty is claimed for them.
In carrying out my invention I provide a pair of extinguisher members 10 which are disposed upon the upper burner member B within the cover G and each of these extinguisher members is formed as a rectangular inverted trough-shaped body 11 of a length and width conforming to the size of the wick used in the burner. Each of these bodies 11 is carried by the upper end of a wire 12 which is bent intermediate its ends to provide a stop shoulder 13 and which is further bent to provide a horizontal portion 14 journaled within a suitable bearing loop 15 or the like formed on or secured on the upper burner member B at the edge of the wick guide receiving opening therein. A crank arm 16 is provided on the horizontal portion 14 and extends downwardly into the. space between the lower and upper burner members A and B. These extinguisher members are both exactlv of the same construction and both of them are mounted at the sides of the opening in the burner member B, in such position that when swung, as here nafter described, the troughlike body 11 will be disposed over the burninc: wick and consequently smother the flame.
Secured upon the bottom burner member A is a circular ring like member 17 which may be and preferably is. a tube, and the crank arms 16 on the extinguisher members 10 extend into this member 17. The member 17 is preferably partitioned, as shown, or else formed in two sections so as to pro vide two separate compartments 18 and 19, in each of wh ch is disposed a ball 20 which may be a marble. ball bearing, or the like. The member 17 is provided in each of the compartments 18 and 19 with depressions 21 within which the balls 20 are normally seated.
When a burner is constructed as above described, its use is the same as any other burner. that is. under normal conditions, and the extinguisher members 10 remain away from the wick and the flame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In the event-that the lamp or lantern, as the case may be, is tilted to a dangerous angle or is upset, either of the balls, depending upon which is high side, will be unseated from its depression 21 and will roll along its compartment 18 or 19 in the member 17 and will strike against whi.hever crank arm 16 extends into that particular compartment. When the ball engages against the crank arm it will be seen that the crank arm will be moved and consequently the wire member 12 as a whole will be moved within the bearing loop 15 whereupon the trough like body 11 will be brought over the end of the wick and willsmother the same. The depressions 21 are provided so that the balls will not roll around and operate the automatic extinguisher in case the burner is tilted a slight amount such as is unavoidable in carrying a lamp from place to place, such slight tilting being not dangerous.
In order that the device may be manipulated manually when desired, I provide a wire 22 which extends through the burner member B and which is connected with one of the wires 12. By pushing upwardly upon the wire 22 the corresponding extinguisher will be operated the same as it operated automatically.
- While I have shown and described the pr ferred embodiment of my invention, it is oi" course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 2.-
1. In combination with a lamp-burner, au-
tomatic extinguishing means comprising a pair of extinguisher members disposed at opposite sides of the WlOk guide and each including an inverted trough-like body carried by a pivoted supporting member, a
crank arm formed oneach supporting member, a ring like guide-way 1n which said crankarms project, and balls disposed witlr' in said guide-way and normally inactive therein, tilting of the burner resulting in movement of either ball-c1rcumferent1ally of said guideway to engage the associated crank arm for swinging the associated extinguisher member to dispose said trough-like body over the burning lamp wick.
2. in combination with a lamp burner, automatic extinguisher means comprising a supporting member pivoted upon the burner, an inverted trough shaped body carried by said supporting member, a crank arm.carried by said supporting member and projecting downwardly, a ring like guide member carried by the burner and into which said crank arm projects, said guide member being provided with a depression, and a ball normally seating within said depression and adapted upon displacement therefrom to roll within and circumterentially of said guide-way and engage said crank for swinging said supporting member to bring said trough-shaped body in engagement with the wick of the burner.
3. In combination with a lamp burner, automatic extinguishing means comprising a pair of arms disposed. upon opposite sides of the wick guide and each iniluding a horizontal portion journaled fiat upon the base of the burner, an upstanding portion and a downwardly extending portion, said downwardly extending portions being at the opposite ends ot'said arms, inverted trough-shaped members carried by said upstanding portions and disposed normally in non-obstructing relation to the wick, a hollow ring member carried by the burner below the base thereof, diametrically opposite partitions in said rin member, the downwardly extending portions of said arms extending into said ring at diametrically opposite points and at equal distances between said partitions, and a pair of balls within said ring member adapted to engage said downwardly extending portions when the lamp is tilted.
