I7 Z0 M J5 MICHAEL SZTANKOVITS, 0F COLLEGE POINT, NEW YORK.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed. May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,827.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL SZTANKO- vrrs, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at College Point, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a lamp ext mguisher, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manneras hereinafter set forth, for extinguishing the flame of a lamp when the latter is tilted or upset.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a lamp extinguisher which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, automatic in its action, readily applied to a lamp burner, efficient in 1ts use, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifica tions can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lamp burner showing the adaptation therewith of an ex tinguishing device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the extinguishing device, Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the burner, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the extinguishing device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 denotes a burner, provided with a wick tube 6 and further having secured to the lower end thereof a plate 7 for swivelly connecting with the burner a vertically disposed hold ing rod 8 having a weight 9 at its lower end. The rod 8 extends u into the burner at one side of the wick tu e and is normally retained in a perpendicular position in a manner to be hereinafter referred to, but is capable of shifting from its normal position when the burner is tilted or the lamp upset. The swivel connection between the rod 8 and the plate 7 is indicated at 10.
Pivotally connected in the burner 5, at the top thereof, as at 11 and 12 is an arcuate extinguisher member 13, and which has one end formed with an arc-shaped slot 14. through which extends a stop pin 15. The member 13 is furthermore provided with an apertured car 16, having attached thereto one end of a coiled spring 17, the other end of the latter being fixed to a lug 18, carried by a plate 19, secured within the burner 5, as at 20. The function of the spring 17 is to shift the member '13 to extinguish the flame.
The member 13 has secured thereto an inwardly extending angle-shaped arm 21, provided with a depending extension 22, formed with a cap 23, which forms a socket 2 1, for the pointed upper end 25 of the rod 18. When the pointed end 25 of the rod 8 extends into the socket 24, the action of the spring 17 is arrested and the extinguisher member is in the position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. If the burner or lamp should tilt or the lamp in which the burner is attached upset, the action of the weight 9 will shift the rod 8 from out of the socket 24, and under such conditions the spring 17 will shift the member 13 to extinguish the flame. The pivot 12 extends from the burner 5 and is provided with a finger piece 27 for the purpose of restoring the member 13 to inoperative position, such position being as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1. Operative position of the member 13, is as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
What I claim is A lamp extinguisher comprising the combination with a burner, of a counterbalanced holding rod pivotally connected to and extending up into said burner, a spring controlled extinguisher member pivotally connected within said burner and provided with an angle-shaped arm having a depending portion formed with a pocket adapted In testimony whereof I afiix my signature for the reception of said rod for holding in the presence of two Witnesses.
