EAR AND BAIL FOR COOKING-VESSELS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,302, dated October 10, 1893.

To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BoWERs, a citlzen of the United States ofAm erica, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certa1n new and useful Improvements in Ears and Bails for Cooking-Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Th1s invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ears and bails for cooking vessels and the like.

The object of the invention is to employ novel means for attaching the bail to the vessel whereby the said bail may be retained in a vertical inclined or horizontal position.

The advantages resulting from this arrangement are as follows: first; that the said ball may be kept comparatively cool when the vessel is in use, that is to say, when the vessel is placed over a fire or on a stove; second, that the position of the said bail may be readily changed from a horizontal to a vertical or vice versafthird, owing to the extreme simplicity of construction, the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum; and finally, while observing neatness ofdesign in the construction of the device, carer ful attention has developed and given the same strength, durability, satisfaction and efficlency in operation. 7 With these objects in view, my invention consists in various novel arrangements and combmat-ions of parts, hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings whlch form a part of this specification and wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1, is a perspective view of a cooklng vessel with my improvements attached thereto, showing the bail in a vertical position. Fig. 2, is a view in elevation showing the ear provided with a series of studs arranged in the approximate form of a circle. Figs. 3 and 4., are detail side views partly in section for the purpose of illustrating several forms of studs or projections.

In these drawings, A, indicates the vessel proper, having secured on each side, at or near the top and diametrically opposite each other, the ears B, B. These ears B, B, have upwardly extending lugs b b centrally apertured at b b for the reception of the bent up ends of the bail O. Arranged on the inner face of each of these lugs is a series of projections b I), which are preferably performed by indenting the metal as shown in Fig. 3 though if desired, they may be cast thereon, (see Fig. 4) and are adapted for engagement with the bent up ends of the bail,

whereby the latter may be retained at various angles of elevation. Thus it will be understood, that when the bail is in a vertical position, the rounded studs or projections b offer a resistance to the passage of said bail and serve to retain the same against falling by its own weight; furthermore, in order to change this position to a horizontal one, it is only necessary to exert a slight pressure, which, owing to the resiliency of the metallic bail causes it to spring past these studs b and fall against the sides of the vessel or the lowest stud, as the case may be. It will also be noted and readily understood, that the projections or studs may be placed on the outside of the lugs or on both sides if desired; however, the resistance being less .on the inside, I prefer the construction as shown.

Referring to Fig. 2, the lug B is shown provided with a series of studs or projections -btarranged thereon in the approximate form of a circle by which the bail may be retained at any desired angle.

It will be particularly noted that other changes may be made in the detail construction, without departing materially from the general idea involved and that the improvement may be applied to various kinds of vessels where this result is desired.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A vessel provided with apertured ears, a bail connecting with the ears and a series of studs or projections formed integral with the ears and so arranged whereby the bail may engage therewith and be supported at difierent angles, as specified.
