G. S MOONEY. BASKET. APPLICATION 111L111) snr'r. 8,1908.
938,497,, Patented N012, 1969;
tirtrrnn stra ns AtENT oration CHARLES S. MOONEY, OF CHICAGO. ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR TO NORTH'WESTEBN EXPANDED METAL COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. A CORPORATIGN OF ILLINGIS. I
BASKET.
Specification of LettersPateat.
Application filed. September 8, 1908.
Patented Nov. 2 Serial No. 451,973.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (n.vnnns S. hioonnr, a ritizen of the l nited States, residing at (hit-ago. in the county of (look and State of lllinois. have invented rertain new and use- 'ful improvements in Baskets, otwvhich the following is a speeifieationv 'lhis invention relates to improvements in baskets. and the primary object of the same is to provide an improved metallic basket eonstrueted of expanded metal and so shaped that a plurality of basket-s may be (-ompaetly nested for shipment or other pur- PUSLN.
further object is to provide improved means for holding and reniovably securing the bottom of the basket in position.
further objeet is to provide an improved basket of this character which Will be simple, durable and (-heap in construction and ell'eetive and ellirient in operation.
To the attainment of these. ends and the areoniplisluuent of other new and useful objerts. as will appear. the invention consists in features of novelty in the eonstruction, eombination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully deseribed, and rlaimed and shown in the aeeompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention. and in \vhieh Figure l is a seetional view with parts broken away of an improved basket of this rharaeter eonstrut-ted in aeeordanee, with the prineiplesof this invention. Fig. :3 is an enlarged detail elevation of a portion of the body of the basket. showing the manner of ronueeting the extremities of the material to form the basket.
Referring more partieulariv to the drawing and in the present exemplilioation ot' the inventi n. the nmneral 1U designates the body portion of the basket whieh is preferably eonslrueted of a single pieee of expanded metal. The extremities ll. 12. of the material'are preferably slightly over lapped. as shown in big. 2. and these extremities may be seeured together to form the body portion of the basket. in any desired or single manner. preferably by means of a llexible pieeeof material. sueh a wire ill. or the like iuterlaeed into the material to form a binding or lat-lug.
The body portion of the basket tapers from the, upper to the lower edge thereof and the upper extremity is preferably 'llared outwardly as at 14. Arranged Within the 1 lower edge of the body portion is a. ring 15, preferably constructed of stout Wire and the extremity of. the body portion is flared or bent inwardly and around the ring 15 for eruring the latter in position.
A similar ring it; JHTEI ELHblfJ constructed of stout wire and of a diameter somewhat larger than the diameter of the ring 15 so!- rounds the body portion of the basket adjaeent its upper edge and the body portion is tian ed or bent around this rin 1G for securing the latter in -position and tor bracin the upper edge oi the basket. "if desired and in order to hold the lacing wire 13 against aeridental displacement5 the extremities thereof may be respectively bent or twisted around the rings l5, l6.
The bottom ot." the basket is preferably preferably of sheet metal or the like. and the periphery of the button 17 is flanged as at 18 to form a laterally projeeting portion. The diameter of the bottom 17 is slightly less than the diameter of the body portion of the basket adjareut the ring 15 sothat when the bottom 17 is plared within the basket. the edge of the flanged portion in will rest upon the ring 15 and the flange will form an extended bearing surfaee against the basket whereby the bottom will be held triet'ionally in position within the basket.
The bottom is preferably ronstrueted ot' imperforate material so that. when desired. it may be l'(\'tl'.\t(l so that the tiange will projert upwardly and thereby prevent dirtor partit-les from sifting through the basket adjaeent the bottom.
With this improved eonstruetion it will be apparent that a light. durable and strong basket will be produred and should it. so happen that the papers or artieles heroine wedged into the basket. the entireqrontents of the basket may be readily removed by inverting the basket and shovin; the bottom if out of the basket through the top thereof. whirh will dislodge all of the artii'les or papers. aft er \vhieh the bottom may be readily replaeed.
it. will also be apparent that by lt)tl{lll the ring to inside of the wall of the basket. a plurality of basket may be readily and eompaetly nested for shipment or storage purposes.
ln orderthat the invention might be fully t-onstrueted ol :1 single piece of material 17.
Wardly over the ring to secure the latter in position and to form a circumferential shoulder also within the body, and a removable bottom within the basket, the periphery of said bottom being flanged at an angle to the body portion thereof, the extremity of the flanged portion engaging and resting upon the said shoulder and the flange havrictionel engagement with the body of asket above the shoulder whereby the in will be removobly secured in position.
2. in a basket, the combination of a mec body portion increasing in diameter from the base upwardly, said body being provided with an inwardly projecting circuniit'erentiei shoulder Within the body of the bus at adjacent tbe bzise and a reversible impel rate bottom, said bottom being pro vided with a circumferential flange and adapted to rest upon the shoulderund being held in position by t'rictionai enga ement with the said body portion in either or" its positio ,wbereby the bottom may be readily removed and repiaced through the top of the basket.
A basket constructed of a single piece of expanded metal, the extremities thereof being overlapped to form the body portion, an interlaced flexible member-for securing the said extremities, said body increasing in diameter from the upwardly, a ring within the body adjacent the base and over which the body is bout, a ring surrounding the outside of the body adjacent the top and over which the upper edge or" the body is bent, and a bottom for the basket resting upon the ring adjacent the base, said bottom having frictional engagement with the 'body for removably securing the bottom in position.
4. Aba'sket constructed of a single piece of reticulated metal, the extremities thereof being overlapped and secured together to form a body portion, said body increasing in diameter from the base upwardly, a ring Within the body adjacent the base and over which the-body is bent, a re-iu'forcc for the upper edge of the body and a reversible bottom for the basket entirely within the body and resting upon the ring adjacent the base, said bottom having" frictional engagement with the body for removably securing the bottom against displacement in either of its positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 4th day of September A. D. 1908.
