Description

F. PLMcCOLL.
CONTAINER. APPLICATION FILED DEC-M1917- Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
FRANCIS P. McCOLL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
con'mmnn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed December 1, 1917. Serial'No. 204,807.
To all whom it may concern; I Be it known that I, FRANCIS P. MoCoLL, a citizen of the Dominion of Canadg', residing in New York, in the county of ew York and State of New York, have invented a new I and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to containers and more particularly to containers having sheet metal tops.
The invention has for a principal object an improved construction of thecover to be combined with a bail secured directly to the cover or closure.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a construction wherein the provision of the bailwill not result in the provision of openings through the cover communicating with the interior of the container,-that is to say, the invention contemplates the provision of a bail positioned through the cover, this construction permit ting the formation of a complete closure.
further object of the invention is the provision of a container having a bail secured to the cover,wh1ch w1ll be cheap to manufacture, ,of pleasing appearance and readily permitting the container to be can ried about by the bail without danger of the bail becoming loose.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container embodying my invention;
-Fi 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial section showing certain details of construction.
Referring to the drawing it will be noted that the container comprises body 4 to which is seamed or otherwise secured a bottom 5, which body and bottom may be of any preferred size and construction. A cover 6 has a screw flange 9 having inwardly extending inclined lips or partial threads 7 adapted to engage behind similarly in-.
clined outwardly impressed .protuberances 8 on the body to screw the cover into place. The flange 9 is spaced throughout its lower part from the body and in this part is provided a pair of bail receiving openings 10 in which may engage hooked ends 11 of the bail 12, the bail'thus being secured directly to the flange .of the cover.- The screw threads'hold the cover down upon the body to form a seal13 at the top and above the portions of the flange offset and holding the bail ends. The engagement between the cover and body above the ends of the bail permits of theformation of a complete closure.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and
it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention orsacrificingall of its material advantages,
the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
- 1. A container body formed near its mouth with spaced-apart inclined protuberances 8, and a cover having a continuous depending flange adapted to engage the upper edge of the body, said flange being formed withspaced-apart lips7, the lower part of the flange being spaced away from the body and formed with bail-apertures.
2. A container body having the edge of its mouth curled inwardly and downwardly, a cover formed with a bent-up annular portion which embraces the inner side of said inwardly curled edge and the outer side of the body wall, said cover being formed with a continuous flange which depends from the outerpart of said annular portion and is spaced away from the body, and a bail having its ends extending through and pivoted in said depending flange, said body and cover having separable connecting means whereby the cover may carry the body.
3. The combination of a container body, a cover formed with a depending flange the upper part of which fits against the outer face of the body at its mouth and the lower part of which extends continuously around the body and is bent out and spaced away from the same, and abail having its ends extended through and pivoted to said lower part of the cover flange, said body and cover face of the body at its mouthand the lower its ends extended through and pivoted to said lower part of the cover flange, said body and cover having separable connecting means whereby the cover may carry the 10 body.
5. The combination of a container body having an inwardly turned top edge, a cover having a depending1 flange the upper portion of which fits t e exterior of the body and which is thence bent'outward and downward to form a bottom flange which is said spaced away portion of the cover flange and having its ends arranged in the space thus provided, so as to permit free movement of the bail, and interlocking securing projections which extend inward' from the cover flange and outward fro'mthe body and which cooperate in said s ace between the bod 1 and the lower part 0 the cover flange. Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
