LAMP-TORCH.
SPECIFICATION `forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,830, dated February 24, 1880. l Application filed December 18, 1879.

Sta-te of New York', have invented a new and useful ImprovementinLamp-Torches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to thatclass of devices which are used to light the gas burners and lamps employed in factories and mills, where it is essential to the safety of surroundings, as regards communicating lire to them, that the torch shall be inclosedby a protecting surrounding screen.
My invention consists in combining with a lamp having a stati' and handle a surrounding screen constructed with a perforated and coneformed top, open atthe apex, having air-sup plying apertures at the bottom, and actuated so as to be drawn down' around the lamp by means of a finger-hook arranged upon a sliding cylinder which surrounds the staff. The finger-hook is connected with the screen, and acts, when grasped by the finger, against the force of a spiral spring upon the staff, by means of which spring the screen is caused to rise and return when the grasp of the lingerhoolr is released, the object being to provide a means by which the lighted wick will be near the top of the screen for lighting purposes when the latter is drawn down, and by which the screen will automaticallybereturned -to surround the lighted wick lower down in the inclosure formed by the screen when the finger-grasp of the hook is released.
In the accompanyingxdrawings there are two igures illustrating my invention, in both of which the same reference-letters refer to the same parts. y Figure 1 shows, in elevation, a view of a lamp-torch containing my invention and the manner of grasping it so as to use the fingerhook for pulling down the screen. Fig. 2 illustrates, in vertical section, the same device, and, by means of a dottedline, the relative position of the lamp and screen when the latter is drawn down around the former and against the action of the spring.
The several parts composing the device are designated by referenceLletters, as follows: L denotes the lamp, having the wick-tube The operation of the combined parts'com?n posing the device is as follows: When the handle J is grasped the screen is pulled down around the lamp bythe finger of the operator, as shown in Fig. l and the dotted line in Fig. 2, and it brings the open top near the wick, and sufficiently so to ignite the gas escaping from an opened burner. When this is done the finger-hook is released, and then, by the action ofthe spring, the screen rises so as to inclose and surround the lamp, as shown in Fig. 2, in the position other than the one shown `by the dotted line.
I am well aware that lamp-torches have been made having a protecting screen which could be drawn down around the lamp, so as to have the wick project from the top of the screen.
I am also aware that it is not new to combine a lamp and inclosing-screen open at the top, and with a spiral spring surrounding the handle, and provided with a stop, so that when the screen was pressed against the burner-base of a lamp-post or other object the screen would be forced back against the spring, with the wick at the opening.
My improvement upon these older devices consists in combining with the lamp-screen and spring a means to move the screen, to be operated from the hand of the person grasping the device.
While I have shown and illustrated. a sliding screen having a cone-formed perforated top, I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise form shown, for the combined spring sliding tube and linger-hook as arranged would perform the same office in the same manner, whether a cone-formed screen was used or one of some other form having the same connection was employed.

`I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Having thus described my invention, what ent, is-
1. A lamp-torch having a surrounding sliding screen inclosing the Wick-tube and lamp, and a spiral spring surrounding the staffv between the screen and handle, in combination with a finger-hook connected to the screen, by means of Which the latter may be drawn down around the Wick-tube and lamp against the force of the spring, it (the screw) being automatically returned when the grasp of the tinger-hook is released, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lamptorch, a surrounding screen having a cone-formed perforated top and airsupplying apertures at its base, in eombination with a spiral spring surrounding the staff, l
and an exterior sliding cylinder surrounding the spring and staff and connected to the screen at its base, With a finger-hook upon the sliding cylinder, by which, when the staff is grasped, the screen may be drawn down around the lamp and Wick to ignite gas and other material burned for illumination, and arranged substantially as set forth, so that when the iinger-hook is released the screen will be pushed up higher around the lamp by the force of the spring, as herein shown and described. f
