GAS-LIGHTER.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Gas Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a gas-lighter in which a lamp is so combined with a casing that the latter shall inclose the flame, and thereby prevent its contact with combustible materials.

To the upper portion of the lamp is detachably fitted the lower portion or sleeve, 6, of a casing, D, within which is the combustionchamber D, the casing having an enlargement, f, perforated with a number of holes, h, on the under side. Any desired number of outlets, 13, near the upper end of the casing permits the escape of the products of combustion from the chamber D, openings m in the casing near the upper end of the lamp admitting air for supporting combustion.
. To the top of the casing is secured a slotted projection, n, so that the lighter may be used as a wrench for openingand closing the valve eocks of gas-burners.
It is important that the openings m and 71. should be in such positions or of such a character as to direct the currents of air upward through the combustion-chamber D, as indi cated by the arrows in Fig. 1, so long as the top of the lighter is held above the level of the wick-tube; but when the lighter is held horizontally, or with the upper end of the com bustion-chamber somewhat below the level of the wick, air-currents will not enter through the openings on and h, and the lighter can in this way be readily extinguished. If horizontal openings were made in the vertical walls of the combustion-chamber, cross-currents of air. created as the lighter was carried about in the hand would extinguish the light; but by making the openings h and m vertical, or in some cases they would be made at an angle, in respect to avertical line through the casing D, all currents are directed upward through the combustioirchamber at the moment they en ter, and when the instrument, with the lamp lighted, is held nearly vertically over a gas burner or in the position shown in Fig. 4, the gas from the burner, whose cock has been opened, will pass with the air-currents through the openings 72. m, and will at once be ignited.
I form in the sleeve 0 a vertical slot, 0, Figs. 1 and 4, in order to allow of the admittanceof air to the flame while the casing D is being pushed down onto the lamp after the lamp has been lighted.
In order to prevent the casing from turning on the lamp when the instrument is used as a wrench, there is a slot in the sleeve 6, which formsthe lower portion of the said casing, for receiving a pin, 00, projecting from the lamp.
Disclaiming the combination, in a gas-lighter, of a handle, lamp, and easing, I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a lamp, B, constructed for attachment to a handle, A, with a casing, D, detachably fitted t0 the lamp and provided with openings, all substantially as set forth.
2. A portable gas-lighter, consisting of a handle and lamp, with a casing fitted to the lamp, and having perforations vertical or at an angle in respect to a vertical line through said casing, as and for the purpose set forth.

substantially as set forth.
