TNTTED STATES HORATIO FAIRBANKS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT' IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,2@l9 dated April 12, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HORATIO FAIRBANKS, a resident of Boston, in the county of Sutt'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a side elevation," and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of a lamp-cap, screw, and wiektube provided with my invention.
The purpose of my invention or improvement is to supply the flame of a wick with oxygen and prevent such flame from smoking, particularly when a light hydrocarbon fluidsuch as petroleum-naphthaor coal'oil naphtha. kerosene, or such like luid-may be used in or with the wick.
In Fig. 2 ofthe drawings, A denotes a wicktube projecting upward from the lower part ot' a conical tube, B, which circumscribes the tube A and extends downward from the screwcap O ot' a lamp, the said cap O, when in use, being screwed into the cap of the neck of the oil-reservoir of a lamp and so that the part .B may extend into such reservoir. The tube B forms a chamber, a, which encompasses the wick-tube A, and is closed at bottom and open at top. Another tube, D, extends around the wick-tube A and within the chamber a, and is so adapted to the tube A as to be capable of being raised or depressed thereon. The lower part or end of the tube D tits closely ou the tube A, the upper end of the bore of the tube D having a diameter larger than that of the tube A, in order to form around the said tube A an air-chamber or space, b. Openings c c, are madel aterally through the tube D, or that part of it which is within the cham ber a, in order that air for supply of the flame of the wick may pass into the tube D or down into the chamber a, and from thence How into the openings c c and enter and pass up through the chamber b. By raising the tubeD on the tube A until the top of the former may come in or very nearly in contact with the ame of the wick (when the tube A may be supplied with a wick and the latter may contain a combustible fluid iniiamed at its top) the iame will not only be supplied with air, but Will be prevented from emitting smoke. While the tube B and its chamber a operate to prevent the heat ofthe dame from being conducted by the wick-tube into the fluid of the iamp-reservoir so as to heat the same, and while the tube D operates to supply the iiame with oxygen and prevent it from smoking, the air for the supply ot' combustion, by being caused to pass down within the chamber a, will abstract heat from the tube A and from the tubes B and D, and thus not onlyr prevent the iuid within the lamp reservoir from becoming heated, but prevent the tube B from being burned or injured by the dame.
1 do not claim the combination ot' the tube B and its chamber a with the screw-cap C and its wick-tube A, nor do I claim a stationary cone or deiiector or airconduit combined with a wick-tube and for the purpose of sup` plyin g the wick with air.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is as follows:
l. The combination of the adjustable air supplying tube or conduit D with the wicktube A, the said conduit being movable vertically on the wick-tube and provided with air-entrance openings, substantially as described.
2. The combination and arrangement ofthe air-supply tube D and its air-inlets, with the wick-tube A and the cireumscribing chamber a, formed by the conical tube B, extending down from the screw-cap O, substantially as specilicd.
HORATIO FAIRBANKS.
