UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
ANDREW P. W. SKINNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED LAMP FILLER, LIGHTER, EXTINGUISHER, AND TORCH.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,578, dated August '7, 1883.
Application led December 20. 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREWP. W. SKINNER,
Aof Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in a Combination Lamp Filler, Lighter, Extinguisher,' and Torch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements on Letters Patent No. 259,645; and it consists `in combining with a tubular staff an oil-reservoir having the opening therein closed by a screw-cap vprovided -with a llingspout and an adjustable lighting-tube, and by removing said screw-cap and the insertion of a large wick the apparatus is adapted to be used as a torch.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of an apparatus embodying my improved features, and Fig. 2 a modification ofthe same.
Referring t0 the drawings, A represents an oil-reservoir attached to the tubular staff or handle. This reservoirmay be secured to the tubular handle in any suitable manner, and is provided with the screw-cap a, closing the opening therein. The removable cap ais perforated, and provided with the curved iillingspout a and the adjustable wick-tube a?. The outer end of the filling-spout is closed by the cap a. The wick-tube a2 is constructed in two parts, and connected at a* by a telescopic 35 joint, which admits of the same being turned upward, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings, or turned downward, as shown, so that the tube may be conveniently inserted down the lamp-chimney and the lamp (No model.)
lighted without the necessity of having to re- 4o .move the chimney. The oilreservoir and filling-spout admit of the lamps being readily filled without removing the same from the brackets. The lower end of the tubular han-` dle is enlarged to conform to the shape of the mouth, while the upper curved end is contracted to give more force to the air being blown through when extinguishing lights. The wrench b is adapted to engage with and turn the thumb-screwof gas-fixtures.
Fig. 2 shows the apparatus changed into a torch-light, which is accomplished by removing the screw-cap @,which takes with it the spout a and the adjustable lighting-tube a. Then insert the large wick D, .the neck or contracted end (l of the reservoir serving as a wick-tube. p
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is- Y l. In an apparatus as described, the coinbination, with the tubular staff B, of the oilreservoir A, having the opening therein closed by the removable screw-,cap al, which is provided with the curved filling-'spout a and the wick-tube a2 and the enlarged auxiliary wicktube D, whereby the device is adapted to be used as a lamp filler, lighter, extinguisher, and torch, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the tubular staff 70 B, of the oil-reservoir A, the removable screwcap a, the filling-spout a', and the adjustable wick or lighting tube a2, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
i ANDREW P. V. SKINNER.
