IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING DEVICES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,829, dated September 23, 1879 application filed June 10, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. RIEDEL, of Jersey City Heights, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new andusefulmprovementsin Lamp Lighters and Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side view of my improved lamp lighter and extinguisher, partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the lighting device.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to an improved lamp lighting and extinguishing device, which may be used for kerosene-lamps of all kinds,vbut which is more especially designed for the lamps using the so called illuminatorsviz., a closed shade without chimney. The lighting and extinguishing of these lamps in stores, restaurants, halls, 85e., are thereby facilitated and quickly accomplished.

The invention consists of a bent hollow tube with a handle at the lower end and a small lighting device at the upper end.

The hollow tube is connected with a flexible tube, for readily blowing through the same and extinguishing thereby theli ght when the mouth of the tube is placed over the dame.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a hollow handle, rod, or tube, which is bent downward at the upper end, and B the handle of the same. j

The handle-tube is made of sufcient length to readily reach the lamps supported on chandeliers, brackets, Ste., the bent-down portion being again of such length that when inserted into the lamps it extends down to the burner.

A lighting device, C, of small size, is arranged at the end of the downwardly-bent portion of the handle-tube, and consists of a small wick-tube, a, which extends at an obtuse angle from tube A, and of a small oil-reservoir, b, above the same.

The wick passes from the reservoir to the mouth of the tube, and is lighted with a match when the lamps are to be lighted. The wick is supplied, preferably by means of an oiler, with a small quantity of oil, a few drops being sufficient, so as to avoid the spilling of the oil.

The lighting device is lowered through the chimney or shade until Vit comes in contact with the burner of the lamp and lights the wick. The lighting device is then withdrawn and the next lamp lighted, and so on. Whenever one lamp is lighted, the lighting device may also be readily lighted by the lamp.

The hollow bent tube A has an orifice, e, at the upper end, and serves, in connection with a flexible tube, D, that is connected in a suitable manner with the handle-tube, either above or below the handle, for extinguishing the lamps. For this purpose the upper end is inserted in the same manner into the lamps as when lighting, and then the end of the ilexible tube, which is preferably provided with a mouth-piece, held to the mouth. By blowing through the tube the lamp is instantly extinguished.

The device can be cheaply furnished, is perfectly clean when care is taken that only a small quantity of oil is supplied to the wick, and is Very convenient in use, as both the lighting and extinguishing of lamps can be accomplished by the same device.

I am aware that combined lighting and extinguishing devices, such as that shown in the patent of J. W. ODonuell, dated VFebruary 22, 1876, and numbered 174,053, have been used heretofore, and I therefore do not claim them, broadly.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a bent hollow handletube having an orice at the upperend with a flexible tube connected to the lower part for blowing through the handle-tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of a bent hollow handletube having a lighting device at the upper end with a ilexible connecting-tube at the lower end, adapted, substantially as described for use both as a lighting and extinguishing device.
