Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON PRIER, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
TORCH-LAMP FOR FIREMEN AND PATROLMEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,767, dated January 13, 1891.
Application filed July 31, 1890, Serial No. 860,544. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON PRIER, of Kansas City, VVyandotte county, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Torch-Lamps for Firemen and Patrolmen, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in torches; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is a View in elevation of my lamp, which is designed more particularly for firemen. Fig. 2 isa verticalsectional view of the same, showing the interior. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of my seamless lamp, which is designed for patrolmen.
It is so constructed that it can be rigidly secured at any suitable point on the hosewagon or the firemens truclnwagon. I have also provided a cap K, which is secured over the mouth of the lamp when the light is extin gnished.
B represents the seamless torch-lamp.
O is the screw, passing through a hoopband, which extends round the torch, by which the torch is pivotally secured, the construction of which is seen more clearly at sectional view Fig. 2. Said band is also pivotally secured to extended arms F and F.
D is the band. E E are screws, which hold said band in position to extended arms; G, the base of the extended arms.
M is the slot in the hollow sleeve, in which operates an adjustable bolt N, which is forced up and down bya projection Q. Said adjustable bolt is held in position by a spiral spring R, located under it, normally urging the bolt outward. Said bolt can be thrustin and with drawn at will in the opening in the lower portion, by which said torch is held in an upright position.
When it is found necessary to set the torch down on the ground or floor, the bolt is withdrawn from the bottom of the lamp, when the lamp, by reason of its lower portion being heavier below the band D than above the band, will adjust itself into a suitable position and rest on the flange Y, which is made for that purpose.
N is the adjustable bolt.
S is a recess at the lower portion of slot M. \Vhen Q is turned laterally, it catches in recess S, which holds tlie bolt down flush with the top of the sleeve 0.
U is the burner carrying the wick-tube G, and is screwed into the opening 'l of the lamp.
L is a brolzen-oft section of the torch-handle.
At Fig. 2 is also seen a sectional view of the connection of the handle to the torch, which is fully described.
K is a cap, (seen at Fig. 3,) which is used for covering the mouth of the torch when the light is extinguished.
E, Fig. 3, is the burner, which is secured in the mouth of the torch.
I are the threads, which are cut on the outer portion of the neck of the lamp, over which the cap K is secured.
F is the lower portion of the threads.
G is the portion of the burner extending down into the interior of the lamp. His the wick. The sectional view at Fig. 3 is similar to that at Fig." 2, which is fully described.
The lamp shown in Fig. 3 has a screwthreaded opening in the base portion, into which a screw-threaded stud C may be inserted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire protection in by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a torch, a supporting-frame, a lamp, a circular band encircling said lamp and secured thereto, the said band being pivotally secured to the frame, a handle attached to said frame, a sleeve also attached to the frame, a longitudinal slot M in said sleeve, a transverse slot S, connecting with the lower end of said first-mentioned slot, a bolt operating in the sleeve, and a spring to normally urge said bolt outward and into a recess or aperture in the base of the lamp, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANTON PRIER.
