Description

(.No Model.)
T. W. HOUOHIN & O. B. BIKER. GOMBINED GAS LIGHTING TORCH, TAPER CASE, AND MATGH BOX.
Pat'ented Dec. 10, 1889.
V Arron/ms.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. HOUCHIN AND CHARLES E. BIKER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,030, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filedJune 30, 1888. Serial No. 278,669. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS W. HOUCHIN and CHARLES E. RIKER, citizens of the' United States, and residents of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gas Lighting Torches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a combined gaslighting torch, taper-case, and match-box, and has for its object a convenient and cheap case for holding wax tapers and matches, which can also be used, when desired, as a gaslighting torch, with a socket for holding a lighted taper in cases where a light is desired for a few moments.
Our invention will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of the torch.
A is the case or holder, 13 the wax tapers, and C the matches. The box for holding the matches is placed at the end of the case. e provide an opening into the case over the box containing the matches and extending far enough over the tapers, so as to permit the ready withdrawal of a taper from the case. Such opening may be protected by a door I, as in the form shown in the figure, or by any other convenient device.
In the figure H is a tube for holding a taper for lighting the gas. K is a key for turning on and off the gas. L is a hook for pulling down a movable fix'tu re, and H a little socket which may be formed and placed as shown, or in any convenient way or place. This socket serves to hold a lighted taper vertically, so that when a light is desired for only a few moments it may be not only conveniently carried, but set down, if desired.
By the combination which we have formed we provide not only the usual gas-lighting torch, but also, as a part of the same, a convenient place for holding the tapers and the matches where they are ready for use when and where wanted, with an attachment which allows the torch to be used in the place of a lamp for a short time.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined gas-lighting torch, tapercase, and match-box, composed of two chambers-one for tapers and the other for matches-said case provided with an opening for withdrawalof tapers and matches and with tube H and key K, substantially as described and shown.
2. A combined gas-lighting torch, tapercase, and match-box, composed of two chambers-one for tapers and the other for matches said case provided with an opening for withdrawal of tapers and matches, and with tube H, key K, and socket H, substantially as described and shown.
3. A combined gas-lighting torch, tapercase, and match-box, composed of two chambersone for tapers and the other for matchessaid case provided with an opening for withdrawal of tapers and matches, and with tube H, key K, socket H, and hook L, substantially as described and shown.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 21st day of October, A. D. 1889.
