IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-BOXES AND ClGAR-LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,411, dated March 10, 1874 application filed August 23, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE J. GAPEWELL, of Cheshire, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Lighter, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of a combined match-box and cigar-lighter; and the invention consists in combining, with a match-box, a shield or guard, which not only preserves the lighted match from drafts of wind that might extinguish it, but, at the same time, induces a draft which forces the iiame clear of the guard, so that it may be readily used for lighting a cigar, &c.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a side view of my invention, showing guard and match-box partly in section Fig. 2, a cross-section taken in the line w w Fig. 3, a cross-section taken in the line w w; Fig. 4, a cross-section taken in the line y y; and Fig. 5, a side elevation, showing modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures. A represents a match-box, which may be made from thin sheet metal or other suitable material, and of cylindrical or any other desired shape. The top and bottom of the matchbox are closed, and in its side is formed a slot or opening, C, this slot or opening being of sufficient length and width to readily insert matches in the box, and sufficiently far from the bottom and top of the box to insure an inclosed space which will retain the matches within it. Into this match-box, and on either The guard D has also formed in it, near its base or lower end, a series of perforations, c, and on one side a series of corrugations or indentations, f, and at the upper end of said corrugations an opening, F. The upper end of the guard D is open, as indicated by letter G, but the edge of the opening is surrounded by a flange, g.
My combined match-box and cigar-lighter being constructed substantially as I have described it, its operation is as follows: Matches are introduced into the box A through the slot C, and in this way the match-box is lled. When it is desired to light a match under circumstances where it would probably be extinguished by wind or drafts of air, the guard D is slid upward, and a match taken from the box A through the slot C, and the head of the match rubbed on the corrugations j', which ignites it, the ignited end being slipped into the opening F (preferably in an inclined position) within the guard D, the shape of the opening F retaining the match in this position, the ignited end of the match being in this way within the guard to protect it from drafts of air, while, at the same time, the burning match, at or near the top of the guard, induces a current of air to pass upward through the perforations e, and carries the ame of the burning match above and clear. from the top of the guard, where it may be used for lighting purposes.
Instead of makin g the upper end ofthe guard D open, it may be closed, and an opening made in the side of the guard D, after opening the letter G, as shown in Fig. 5. In this instance the flame will be deflected against the closed top and be carried out of the side opening by the current of air passing up through the perforations e, as before described.
When the match-box and lighter are not in use the guard D is slipped over the box, thus effectually closing the slot C, keeping the vmatches safely within the box.
Since it is obvious that my combined matchbox and lighter may be variously modified as to form and material without departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not limit myself to the particular construction of the coinbined match-box and lighter hereinbeforc described; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined matchbox and lighter herein described, consisting of a box having channels c and slot C, and a guard, D, having indentations d litting in said channels, and openings F G, said guard being movable up and down upon thc box, as and for the purposes specified.
GEORGE J. CAPEWELL. Vitncsscs II. L. WATTENBERG, Crus. MILLER.
