Be it known that- I, CLYDE A. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in thecounty of Schuylkilland State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to devices for facilipelletssinglyto the flame pocket, and novel means for igniting the. pellet immediately prior to'its entrance into the-flame pocket. The invention; is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter fully set forth. V r
The drawing is a view, partly in side eleration and partly inv vertical section, of a device embodying the invention.-
Incarrying out the invention, I employ a container 1 which may be of any suitable material and will preferably be of such dimensions that it may be" conveniently held in the-hands of theuser. The container is providedwith an open top normally closed by a hinged cover 2, and within the con taineris a tapered bottom? whereby the pellets, indicated at4, are fed to an outlet 5. Below the ta ered bottom 3 is a tubular guide 6 in whic is mounteda plunger 7 and into which the port5'opens. The tubular guide 6 and the webs defining the outlet port 5 may be formed integral with the tapered bottom 3 and'the front wall 8 of the container nearits lower end is carried inwardly and downwardly, as shown at 9, to merge into the top wall of the tubular guide and constitute the top of the flame chamber, indicated at 10. The port 5 is of such dimensions that it will permit the passage of only one pellet at a time and the pellet will be received upon the bottom wall of the tubular guide 6 immediately in front of the plunger 7, as shown in the drawing; A concave web 11 forms thebottom of the flame chamber and forms a connection between the bottom wall of the tubular uide and the front wall of the container, tile said front well being uninterrupted to provide an opening through which access may be had to the flame chamber. It will also be readily noted that the concave web or wall 11 serves as a cup into which the ignited pellet will fall and by which it will be prevented from rolling from the container. 7 An expansion spring 12 ,is housed within the guide 6 between the inner end of the plunger 7 and a plng13 which is littedin the rear or outer end of the guide the said spring tending constantly to move the plunger to the front end of the; guide so that it will cut oil the passage of pellets through the port 5, as will bereadily understood. A lever 14 is fulcrumed upon aside or end wall of the containerand has its lower end pivotally connected with the plunger, while its upper end is provided with a laterally extendinghandlemember 15 playing in an arcuate slot 16 in the wall of the container whereby the lever may be manipulated to eXpel a pellet. The bottom 3 and the upper wall of the guide 6 are provided with slots to accommodate the lever, as shown at 17 and .18 and will beunderstood readily. I
At the front end of the guide 6 and in the upper wall of the same is an ignition member 19 which may be of any approved construction and is adapted to project through the wall of the guide so as to present a roughened surface, indicated at 20, to y a pellet fed below it. This ignition block is provided with a shoulder 21 whereby it is prevented from dropping through the upper wall of the tubular guide and it is yieldably held to said wall by a spring 22 disposed between the block and an abutment 23 upon the tapered bottom 3. A similar ignition block 24 is provided below the guide and carries an abrading face 25 which is adapted to project through the bottom wall of the guide immediately below the abrad ing member 20 so as to cooperate therewith, a spring 26 being provided to yieldably support the block 24, as shown. that the opposed abrading faces converge It will be noted toward the flame pocket and, therefore,
