Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. so, 1913.
Application filed May 3, 1913. Serial No. 765,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. STRODEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse; in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
and it consists in the novel features as hereinafter described and particularly pointed a suitable or convenient number of matches with-means attached to the box for permitting the matches to be withdrawn from the same one at a time.
Another objectof the present invention is to provide a. means of the character indicated which will also serve -as a closure for the box and .as means for moving the matches within the box toward the opening W in the same through which the matches are passed out singly.-
In the accompanying drawings'Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of a modified form of the Throughout the following description and the drawings similar reference characters refer to like parts.
The box comprises a case 1 which is preferably elliptical in transverse section. The casing l is closed at one end by a cap 2 and a cap 3 is located over the other end of the said casing. The cap 3 is provided in the vicinity of one of its ends with an opening 4 which is of a diameter suflicient to permit one match to pass therethrough but not suflicient to permit more than one match to pass through at the same time. A guide 5 is located upon the exterior of the .cap 3.
the plate 6 is in a closed position over the opening 4. The cap 3 is provided at that end opposite the end at which the opening 4 is located with an opening 10, the said openng being located below the plane of the intermediate portion of the said cap. The
passes through the opening 10 and the extremity 12 of the said shank lies against the inner ,surface'of the intermediate portion of the cap 3. The return bend 11 of the shank Tim the vicinity of the extremity 12 is provided withoppositely disposed tweenthe shank 11 and the cap 3 to sustain the plate 6 at an adjusted position.
- When the box is closed, the plate 6 is over the opening 4 while the end portion of the shank 7 projects beyond the side of the case 1. Then the box is open, the end of the shank 7 is in close proximity to the side of the case 1 While the opening 8 is in register with the opening 4. While in this condition matches may be passed one at time through the said opening to fill the box or to be withdrawn or removed from the same.
Inasmuch as the plate 6 lies in close proximity to the outer surface of the cap 3 when the said plate is closed over the opening 4,
the box is effectually closed against dampness or moisture and consequently the matches within the case will be preserved in' good condition. As the shank 7 is moved longitudinally to shift the plate 6 with relation to the opening 4, the extremity 12 of the return bend 11 of the said shank will come in contact with the matches in the case 1 and will have a tendency to force or move the matches toward the. opening 4.
Therefore it will be seen thata match box of simple structure is provided and that the box may be easily and quickly manipulated to permit the matches to be withdrawn from the same one at a time and that while in the box, the matches will be protected against a dampness and other in urious effects or elements. Furthermore, the matches will be completely incased in metal and there is no danger of any one or all of them igniting by frictional contact with articles in the pocket of the user and should any of the matches ignite in the box, the sides and cap shank 7 is bent upon itself as at 11 and. This invention has relation to match boxes of the casing will prevent the flame from coming in contact with the clothing of a user.
In the form of box as shown in Fig. 3 the body l is provided with an end 3 having an opening 6 A pin 5 is mounted upon the end 3 and is received in a slot 15 provided in the member 7. The said member 7 is provided with an end flange 9 and otherwise this form of the box is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of.the drawing.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A match box comprising a casing provided with an end opening and a side opening, a plate having an opening and adapted to slide over the end opening of the casing, a shank extending from the plate and bent upon itself and entering the casing through the side opening, the said bent portion of the shank bein provided with humps adapted to engage t e edge of the side opening.
2. A match box comprising a casing having an end opening and a side opening, a plate having an opening adapted .to be brought into register with the end opening of the casing, a shank extending from the plate along the end of the casingand provided with a return bent portion which projects through the side'opening of the casing and which is provided with humps, the extremity of the shank bearing against the inner surface of the end of the casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
