UNITED STATES ,PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAY L. JAEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,075, dated J'uly 10, 1883.
Application filed May 17, 1863. (No model.)
To LN whom.y it may concern:
Beit known that I, Gus'rxv L. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York,
5 have invented vnew and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of. which the following is a specification. i
rlhis invention is especially adapted to boxes for holding that class of matches which are composed of strips of pasteboard or othersimilar materiah and it consists in a flat rectangular box having one of its edges provided with an opening to admit the thumb and fore* finger, in combination with a spring of novel construction arranged within the box to press in the direction of. said edge, so that the matches which may be put in the box are held in contact with said edge for their convenient withdrawal through the4 opening.
It also consists in afiap attached to the box to protect the thumb in igniting the matches, such iap being adapted to be lifted forin serting a match thereunder, and then depressed on the match. f
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure Y1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec- The opening B is made of suficient depth to` conveniently admit the thumb and the forefinger for withdrawing the matches, which are held in contact with said edge of the box having the opening by the action ofthe spring C.
In the example shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, the spring C is composed of a piece of wire, which is attached to one edge of the box to lie against one side thereof, and is bent at the free end toward the other side of the box, forming a finger, c. This finger is the part of the spring which acts upon the matches, and since .the body of the spring clears the matches, said iinger is adapted to take the proper position for allowingfthe box to be lled, as indicated in Fig. 2. Said spring, however, may also be composed of an elastic band, which passes around thematches, and thence through a slot in the edge of the box, having the opening B around the opposite edge of the box, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, it thus serving the additional purpose of keeping the box closed; and I reserve the right to make this spring the subject of aseparate application for Letters Patent.
The flap D is attached to the box on one edge, as at f, by a joint, which permits it to be lifted for inserting a match thereunder, and then depressed on the match and is roughened on its under surface, as shown in Figs. land 3; or, in lieu thereof, the box may be roughened opposite to the flap, as shown in Fig. 8, so that if a match is drawn under the flap in the proper manner it is ignited.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the box having an openingfor withdrawing the matches, of the thumb-protecting ilap D, adapted to be lifted for inserting a match thereunder, and
then depressed on the match, substantially as and for the purpose described. v
2. The combination, with the box having the nger-opening B in one edge, of the wire spring arranged in the box,and provided with the finger e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
