To all whom it may concern:
Be it known" that I, STANLEY Knsnnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lexington, in the county of Davidson and State of North (larolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of boxes and especially to boxes adapted to hold cigarettes or similar articles.
An object of my invention is the construction of the tray of a box in such manner that it may be pushed out of and back into the casing with which the tray is adapted to be used with one hand, thus enabling the user to take articles from the box with the other hand.
A further object of my invention is to construeU a box which, when the box is partly opened will act as a handy and efficient holder enabling the contents such as cigarettes to be taken from the holder.
A. still further object is the provision of a flap at the proper place on the tray to prevent the object from falling out when it should be held to be taken from the tray.
A still further object is the construction of a box from a small amount of material and in such manner that it can be manufactured at a very small cost.
A still further object is the provision of ignition means on the box.
lVith these and further objects in View one embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the box partly opened;
Figure 2 is a similar View from the opposite side illustrating also how an article may be advantageously held by the tray;
Figure 8 is a plan View of the blank from which the tray is made.
My box may be made of cardboard of 45 various kinds or of other suitable material.
in outer case 1, rectangular in shape and with both ends open is provided to receive the tray portion 2 of the box. The tray is made of a single piece of material and is shown flat in Figure 3 with dotted lines to indicate where the blank is bent to form the tray and having a cut to enable the extension to fit properly. This tray consists of a bottom 3, sides 4, ends 5, and a top 6, said top extending only a part of the way over the bottom. It will be noted that the sidewalls are an extension of the bottom, one end is an extension of the bottom, the top is an extension of one end and that the other end is an extension of one side. One end has an extension or wing 7 extending from the side of said end. This same end has a flap 8 as an extension thereof. The dotted lines 9 indicate the places the blank is folded and 10 the cut for the extension 7. Ignition material 11 of any suitable character is placed on the outside of one side of the case.
The tray portion of the box is constructed, as will be obvious, by folding the blank along the lines indicated to produce the tray illustrated in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 the use of one end, the wing and flap is shown to act as a handy holding means for an article contained in the box. It will be observed that a receptacle is formed by the three parts referred to. The article is prevented from falling out by the position of the end flap and is safely held by the end and the wing.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A box comprising an outer casing and a tray therein, said tray having a bottom, top, sides, and ends, one of said ends having a flap norally positioned at a right angle to the length of the end to which it is attached and also a wing normally positioned at a right angle to the side of the end to which it is attached whereby the top of the tray when the end is in open position forms a holding receptacle.
2. A box comprising an outer rectangular casing with both ends open, a tray for said 95 casing, said tray comprising a bottom, sides extending therefrom, an end extending from said bottom, a top extending from said end and another end extending from one of said sides, said last named end hav- 100 ing a wing and flap extending therefrom.
