Description

UNITED STATES PATENT DFFICE.
CLARK A. GIBSON, OF SHELBYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
CARTON SAMPLE HOLDER.
Application filed October 18, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK A. GIBsON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Carton Sample Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cartons or packages and has as its all important object the provision of a carton so constructed as to hold a sample of the contents of the package or carton upon the outside thereof so that the same may be readily examined by the prospective purchasers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cardboard box or receptacle for retaining hair pins and having means exteriorly thereof to hold one of the hair pins in place on the box or receptacle.
The invention further provides an article of manufacture of this character which is of simple construction and at the same time will retain the sample against accidental detachment and yet permit the sample to be detached from the carton for inspection.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter more clearly defined, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same, partly assembled.
Referring in detail to the drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a cardboard box or carton in its entirety. This box may be of any well known construction and the blank forming the same constitutes no part of the invention.
Formed with one of the side walls of the box at its upper longitudinal edge and located centrally of the ends of the box is a sample retaining wall 6 which is folded longitudinally adjacent its free end to afford a tongue 7 As shown in Figure 1 this wall 6 is transversely bowed and is extended to overlie the upper face of the box 5 and the Serial No. 417,596.
tongue 7 inserted through a longitudinal slot 8 formed in the upper wall of the box 5.
A tapered locking tongue 9 is struck in the retaining wall 6 and extends at right angles thereto and has one end engaged in a circular opening 10 in the upper wall of the box 5.
The sample hair pin designated at H is positioned between the retaining wall and the upper wall of the box 5 with the legs thereof straddling and resiliently engaging the tongue 9. It will thus be seen that this tongue serves to prevent the sample hair pin from movement as well as to lock the retaining wall in assembled position.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A sample holder comprising a body and having a slot at one edge and further provided with an opening, a sample retaining wall permanently attached to the body at that edge opposite the slot, the latter being arranged to overlie the body and adapted, with the body, to hold a member therebetween, the free end of the retaining wall being received in the longitudinal slot, and a tongue struck in the retaining wall and ex tending at right angles thereto and engaged in the opening in the body. v
2. A forked member holder including a body having a slot at one edge thereof and further provided with an opening, a retaining wall bridging the body and having one end permanently secured thereto and its opposite end received in the slot, and a right angular-1y disposed tapered tongue struck from the retaining wall and engaged in the opening and adapted to be straddled by a forked member arranged between the body and retaining wall.
3. A sample holder including a receptacle provided with a longitudinal slot in its up per face and also provided With an opening tacle, the retaining Wall and the upper Wall a sample retaining Wall bridging the upper ml the receptacle receiving a resilient forked face of the receptacle and having one end member therebctween With the forks thereof 10 permanently tta h d t th latter at o straddling and resiliently engaging the side thereof and its opposite end received in g the slot, a. tongue struck in the retaining Wall received in the opening in the recep- CLARK A.
