CARTON Filed April 4, 1955 I N V EN TOR, THQQ E [d 06/785193 A77 7 0914/5 VS United States Patent (3 i CARTON Thorpe W. Deakers, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor to Ever- Dry Corporation, Los Angeles, Calif., a corporation of California Application April 4, 1955, Serial No. 498,861
6 Claims. (Cl. 206-44) This invention relates to an improved carton.
It is an object of this invention to produce a carton for the storage, shipping and display of goods.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a carton which will readily receive and retain the goods on display and which can be easily removed therefrom.
It is still a further object of this invention to provide a carton containing lock means for retaining the goods in the carton which are rapidly and easily operated.
It is still a further object of this invention to provide a carton with an enlarged opening permitting mechanical insertion of the goods and then reducing the opening to lock the goods in the carton.
Other objects and advantages will be readily apparent from the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the carton blank.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton as the container is inserted therein.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the base and locking tab folded down.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 with the locking tab in the locking position.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a modified form of locking tab.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the tab of Figure 5 in the bent position.
A sheet of cardboard or like material is cut having a rectangular body 10 and a locking tab 12.
The body 10 is scored as at 14 providing a top section 16. The body 10 has a pair of cuts 18 and 20 spaced from one another and extended longitudinal to scoring 22.
These cuts have opposed arcuate sections 24 and 26 forming circular advertising sections 28 and 30. The body 10 is scored transversely from cuts 18 and 20 to the edges of body 10 as at 32 and 34 to permit folding of the body at this point. The distance between scoring 14 and scorings 32 and 34 is equal to the height of the container 36. In this instance the container is a circular jar although its shape may vary substantially. The retaining strip 38 formed by cuts 18 and 20 and containing advertising sections 28 and 30, is scored at 40, a distance from scoring 14 equal to the diameter of the container 36 to permit folding at this point.
The body 10 is scored at 42 a distance equal to the diameter of container 36 from scorings 32 and 34 and hence a distance from scoring 40 equal to the height of the container 36.
The cuts 18 and 20 and hence retaining strip 38 extend beyond scoring 42 to scoring 22 which is positioned a short distance therefrom.
In assembly as seen in Figure 2 the body 10 is along scorings 32 and 34 with retaining strip 38 folded along scorings 40 and 22. The container is then positioned between the body 10 and strip 38 forming a back and base for the container by body 10 and a top and front for 2,828,856 Patented Apr. 1, 1958 said container by retaining strip 38. The retaining strip loosely fits around the container in this position.
Totighten the retaining strip the body 10 is folded along scoring 42 as seen in Figure 3. This pulls the retaining strip down tightly upon the container locking same in the carton.
To secure the retention of the retaining strip in this position the body and strip are folded backward along scoring 42 to a position overlapping body 10 as seen in Figure 4. The locking tab 12 has a longitudinal scoring 44 and a pair of arcuate scorings 46 and 48 forming ears 50 and 52 which are folded backwardly and project into the slot formed by removal of retaining strip 38 and lie between container 36 and the portions of the body on either side of retaining strip 38. When thus assembled the carton securely holds the container. Suitable advertising matter may be printed upon sections 28 and 30 or on the front face of top section 16.
When the cartons and containers are shipped the section 16 may be folded along scoring 14 over the top of the container to make a compact package and to protect the top.
In Figures 5 and 6 a modified form of locking tab is illustrated having diagonal scorings 54 and 56 forming ears 58 and 60 which fit between the bottom of the container and the body 10.
While what hereinbefore has been described. is the preferred embodiment of this invention it is readily apparent that alterations and modifications can be resorted to without departing from the scope of this invention and such alterations are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A blank to be folded into carton for a container comprising: a blank, a pair of equal length cuts in said blank spaced from one another forming a retaining strip, scoring across said retaining strip at one end thereof, scoring across said blank spaced from the above mentioned end of said retaining strip equal to the height of the container, scoring across said retaining strip spaced from said above mentioned end thereof equal to the width of said container, further scoring across both blank and retaining strip spaced from said above mentioned end of said retaining strip a distance equal to the height plus the width of the container, said cuts extending beyond said last mentioned scoring forming the other end of said retaining strip.
2. A blank to be folded into carton for a container comprising: a blank, a pair of equal length cuts in said blank spaced from one another forming a retaining strip, scoring across said retaining strip at'one end thereof, scoring across said blank spaced from the above mentioned end of said retaining strip equal to the height of the container, scoring across said retaining strip spaced from said above mentioned end thereof equal to the Width of said container, further scoring across both blank and retaining strip spaced from said above mentioned end of said retaining strip a distance equal to the height plus the width of the container, said cuts extending beyond said last mentioned scoring forming the other end of said retaining strip, and a further scoring in said strip at the last mentioned end of said retaining strip.
