3 Claims.
This invention relates to paperboard shipping cartons for individual pairs of scissors or similar articles and particularly to a carton formed by folding a one-piece blank about fold lines formed therein and provided with apertured portions to receive and retain the article.
The carton is formed from a blank that has a portion foldable to provide an article holder and a portion foldable to provide a wrapper. The article holder includes th bottom and end walls of the carton and article retainers overlyin the bottom wall at each end thereof. The retainers are integral with the end walls and the end walls and retainers are extensions of the bottom wall. The end extensions are hingedly connected to the bottom wall by means of fold lines and each is composed of sections hingedly connected by transverse fold lines. The end extensions of th bottom wall are provided with suitable article receiving opening and are foldable upon the article to retain the same in a position overlying the bottom wall. The wrapper is a lateral extension of the bottom wall hinged thereto by a fold line along the rear side edge of the bottom wall and having spaced fold lines parallel to said rear edge that provide a rear wall, a top wall, a front wall and a locking flap that overlies the bottom wall beneath the article retainers.
Objects of the invention are to provide a shipping carton that can be quickly and easily wrapped about a pair of scissors or other article, that firmly secures the article to a wall of the container and that is self locking.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container, bottom up;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the container taken on the line indicated at 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the container with the wrapper in open position and the scissors in place in its holder;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line indicated at 44 in Fig. 3
, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the line indicated at 5--5 in Fig. 3; and
- Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton is formed.
The carton of the present invention has a bottom wall I that is provided with end extensions for engagement with the article. One of the extensions includes an end wall 2 and a handle retainer that comprises a top portion 3, a partition portion 4 and an end flap 5. The end wall 2 is formed by a portion of the blank between parallel fold lines 6 nad I, the fold line 6 being at an end of the bottom I and the fold line I being spaced from the fold line 6 a distance corresponding to the height of the end wall. The partition 4 is formed by parallel transverse fold lines 8 and 9 that may be diagonally disposed to conform to the scissors handle. The spacing of the fold lines 8 and 9 determines the height of the partition 4 and an opening I!) is provided in the partition 4 to receive the scissors. A flap 5 may be provided with a hole I I to receive the scissors pivot.
At the opposite end of the bottom wall I there is an extension which provides an end wall I2 and a retainer having a top portion I3, a partition portion I4 and an end flap I5. The end wall I2 is formed between parallel fold lines I6 and I! and the partition I4 is formed between fold lines I8 and I9 which may be disposed at right angles to the side edges of the extension. The partition I4 has a central aperture 20 to receive the scissors points and the top portion I3 of the retainer may have a lateral extension 2| that is adapted to be folded as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to provide a stop with which the points of the scissor blades engage. Where the scissor points are blunt or where the scissors has a projecting pivot engageable with the hole II, the stop member 2| may be omitted.
In assembling the package the blade portion of the scissors is passed outwardly through the opening I0 and the retaining portions 2, 3 and 5 are folded inwardly over the bottom wall to dispose the scissors handle beneath the top portion 3 and the flap 5 on the bottom I inwardly of the partition 4 as shown in Fig. 2. The extension at the opposite end of the bottom I is then folded to dispose the wall I 2 in vertical position and the retainer in position over the points of the scissors blades, as show in Fig. 2, the flap I5 preferably being bent inwardly toward the wall I2 as shown in Fig. 4.
The scissors assembled in the holder as shown in Fig. 2 is held in fixed position with respect to the bottom wall I. The wrapper, which is a lateral extension of the bottom I, comprises a back wall 22, a top wall 23, a front wall 24 and a looking flap 25. The back wall 22 is formed between fold lines 26 and 2?, the fold line 26 being at the rear edge of the bottom I and the fold line Z'l being spaced therefrom a distance corresponding to the height of the container. The top wall lies between the fold line 2'! and a fold line 28 parallel thereto and spaced therefrom a distance corresponding to the width of the bottom wall l. The front wall 2% is formed between the fold line 28 and the parallel fold line 29 that is spaced from the fold line 28 a distance slightly less than the spacing of the fold line 2'! from the fold line 25.
lhe wrapper folds about the rear, top and front of the article holder and the flap 25 centers between the bottom wall 1 and the end flaps 5 and E5 of the article retainers. The width of the flap 25 at the center is preferably substantially the same as the width or" the bottom wall I and, to facilitate entry of the flap between the bottom wall i and the flaps 5 and 55, the edge 39 or" the locking fiap may be tapered from the ends thereof toward the center and an intermediate fold line 3! may be provided bet een the fold line 29 and the edge of the flap 25 to further facilitate the entry of the flap into the container. To facilitate opening of the carton, the bottom wall may be provided with a central finger notch 32 which enables the wrapper to be grasped to withdraw the locking flap 25 from the container.
The wide locking flap securely holds the wrapper against accidental opening, making it unnecessary to provide any fastening for the wrapper. Ihe wrapper can be quickly and easily opened for inspection of the contents without danger of releasing the article.
It is to be understood that in accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, variations and modifications of the specific devices herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
