Description

J. MALOY.
COMBINATION MATCH BOX.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 7. I920.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MALOY, OF LA CONNER, WASHINGTON.
COMBINATION MATCH-BOX.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN MALoY; a citizen of the United States, and residing at La Conner, in the county of Skagit and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in match boxes and more especially a match box holder and ash tray.
An object of the invention is to provide a match box holder having a recess adapted to receive a box of matches and slot so that a single match may be drawn from the holder through the slot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for a match box formed with an ash receiving depression and made of firebrick clay, cement or similar material finished with a rough surface, so that a match may be struck thereon.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construct-ion, which are particularly pointed out in the following description and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. V
Fig. 4 isa sectional view on line 4-i of Fig. 2.
1 indicates the body of the holder which made quadrilateral in shape, of brick clay, cement or other similar material, to provide a rough surface on the finished article.
One end portion is provided with a recess 2 adapted to form an ash tray. The other end portion is formed with a slot lextending along the edge of the body and down opposite sides thereof as shown at The bottom side of the body is formed with a box receiving recess 6 adapted to receive a box of matches 7. Spring members-8 are mounted in recesses 9 for engaging the box to hold it snugly within the recess in the body.
The end of the body is formed with a slot Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
1920. Serial No. 394,549.
' 10 extending into the recess 6 and at an angle in the body as shown, and is of sufficient size to permit the passage of a match.
The match box is cut away along the slotted portions 4 and 10 of the body to expose the matches.
Constructing the body of brick clay, cement or similar material provides a scratching surface for a match at any point on the body.
If it is desired to withdraw a match from the body, the thumb and forefinger are inserted in the slot 4 and pressure applied against the matches which will cause a match to be pushed out into slot 10, and by drawing the two fingers outwardly from the slot, the match will be grasped and withdrawn from the body in an obvious manner.
When the box is emptied, the springs may be pressed away from the box with the fingers, the box removed and a new one in serted. I
This invention is particularly adapted for use on a counter in cigar and like stores, and may have advertising matter placed on the sides thereof.
h at I claim is 1. An article of manufacture comprising a body formed of fire resisting material, having a rough surface, said body having a recess in the side adjacent one end portion thereof, and a slot formed in the body cooperating with the recess, and a depression formed in the side of the body adjacent the opposite end.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a body formed of fire resisting material, having a rough surface, said body being formed with a recess adjacent one end portion, a slot formed in the end wall and extendingin the side wall of the body and communicating with said recess, the end wall being formed with a transverse slot communicating with the first mentioned slot, and a depression formed in the body adjacent the opposite end.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN MALOY.
