My invention relates to match packages or wardly to provide easy access tothe matches the like and relates more particularly to that type of match package commonly known as the vest pocket type which is usually constructed of paper or cardboard or other suitable material.

One of the objects of my invention is to construct a match package of the vest pocket type wherein a protected match igniting surface is formed as part of the match package.

Another object of my invention is to construct such a match package of the character referred to whereby a cartridge of matches may be enclosed therein and whereby suitable match scratching surfaces are provided to form amatch-head receiving recess.

Another object of m invention is to coniiaving match scratching surfaces thereon and so arranged to prevent the emission of spark therefrom, there by protecting the user and adjacent objects against contact with hot sparks.

A further object of my invention is to provide a match package of simple and economi cal construction whereby production may be greatly increased.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the description of an embodiment of my invention progresses, reference being had. to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.

In-the drawings, Figs. 1, 2 and 3 which are illustrative of one embodiment of my invention I provide a match package consistingxof a back 1, a cover 2, an intermediate spacing portion 4 forming the top of the package, and a match cartridge retaining flap 3. cartridge of matches 4 is secured between the back 1 and the flap 3 by means of a staple or other fastener 5.

As stated above the package is preferably formed from a sheet or strip of material. In

formin the packages as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, i lustrating one embodiment of my invention, a portion of the material intermediate the back 1 and the flap 3 is bent upwardly transversely as at 6, then 1s bent over and then downwardly as at 7 and is then continued upwardly to form the flap 3. In this manner- I have provided a transverse channel or groove of sufficient depth and width to conveniently receive the headed end 9 of amatch 8. The inner surfaces of this channel are preferably coated with an abrasive material 10, for providing match head scratching surfaces, the coating preferably covering the entire inner area of the channel, although I may provide such coating in the extreme inner:

' portion of the channel, or I may provide thement with the match head.

In use a match may be withdrawn from the package in the usual manner. When it is desired to ignite the match the packa e is held by the user as illustrated in Fig. 3, the thumb and fingers of the users left hand holding the package, as shown, while the match is grasped by the right hand. To ignite the match the head 9 is inserted into the channel near one end and then drawn to the other end of the channel with a quick movement of the right hand. While the match head is thus being drawn through the channel, slight pressure may be exerted by the thumb and A fingers of the left hand upon the outer walls of the channel whereby the match head will be subject to contact with a greater area of abrasive material or roughened surface.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a second em-- bodiment'of my invention wherein the struc ture is similar to the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 as consisting of the back 1, the cover 2, the flap 3' and a cartridge of matches 4 secured between the back and the flap by a staple or other fastener 5'. In the embodiinent illustrated in Fig. 4, however, I have formed the match head ignition channel at a point intermediate the cover 2 and the back l'. In the present form, therefore, the match package consists of a strip or sheet of material formed to provide a flap 3 at one end, the material being bent upwardly upon itself to form the back portion 1'. A channel 15 similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and described hereinbefore and having abrasive material therein as described hereinbefore, is formed intermediate the back 1 and the cover 2' and has its match head receiving opening exterior to the body of the packa e.

In use, the package may be grasped in t e left hand with the thumb and fingers adjacent the top of the package and on opposite sides of the groove. A match held by the right hand may then have its headed end inserted within the groove near one end. When it is desired to ignite the match, it is drawn quickly through the groove or channel in contact with the abrasive surfaces therein, whereupon the match will be ignited.

In this form of my invention-it will likewise be noted that protection from burns and hot sparks is afforded.

I have, as shown in the accompanying drawings illustratin two embodiments of my invention, provi ed an inexpensive and convenient vest pocket match package containing a cartridge of matches and having a channel .or recess formed on the package,

, whereby the matches may be ignited'without dangerof flying sparks and consequent burning of clothing and the like, and without the danger of burning the fingers of the user.

What is claimed is I 1. In a folding match package, a match enclosing wrapper composed in seriat-im of a piece of material folded to form a match enclosing wrapper composed in seriatim of a match retaining flap, an end, a back, a hinge end and a bin ed cover, a plurality of severable matches aving unseverable butt ends secured between the flap and back and rigidly permanently spacing is em apart; and an externally concave fold formed in the end be tween the flap andthe back, provided with abrasive match striking material and maintained substantially of preselected shape by the rigidly spaced flap and back. v

In a folding match package, a single piece'of material folded to form a match enclosing wrapper composed in seriatim of a match retaining flap, an end,- a back, a hinge end, and a hinged cover, a plurality of severable matches having unseverable butt ends secured between the flap and back and rigidly permanently spacing them'apart; and an externally concave fold formed in the end between theflap and back and shaped in cross section to substantially fit the head of a match and provided with abrasive match striking material and held in said shape by the rigidly spaced flap and back."
