OSCAR J. FRIEDMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-MATCH FOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed March 22, 1915. Serial No. 16,058.
Be it known thatl, ()smn J. FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State (if Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Match Folders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to match packages and has more particular reference to safety match folders of the type comprised of a card of safety matches incased in a holder formed of a folded sheet of cardboard or heavy paper.
Prior to my invention it has been frequently the custom to provide safety matches by slitting a sheet of cardboard or other stiff heavy material and providing the stems thus formed between the slits with match-head material, each match being torn from the body of the card as it is needed and ignited by striking upon a surface of match-igniting material provided for this purpose upon the cover or holder which is secured to the card. This cover or holder consists generally of a sheet of material folded to provide a back and overlapping front flaps, the lower flap and lower edge of the back being fast to and upon opposite sides of the lower and unslit end of the card. The igniting surface has prior to my invention been usually placed upon the outer forward face of the lower front flap. When thus arranged there is considerable danger of the striking of one match igniting in its flash the outer matches of the card, as frequently the upper front flap is left free or open when the match is struck. Such an accident is almost certain to seriously burn the hand of the user and may, under certain conditions, be the cause of serious fire. Accidents of this kind have been so frequent as to cause certain manufacturers of matches of this character toprint instructions upon the cover directing that the free or upper front flap be brought to closed position before each match is struck.
It is the object of this invention to provide a match folder of matches of the card type which will eliminate the danger of igniting the matches left in the card when each match is struck whether the front free cover flap be brought to closed position or not.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is' a perspective view of a safety match folder embodying my invention showmg thefront cover flaps 1n the position they assume when arranged for packaging or for carrying in the pocket; Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing the front flaps open to permit withdrawal of matches therefrom; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the folder with the parts arranged as shown in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the drawing a card of matches of usual or preferred type and consisting of a double sheet 11 slit to form the match stems 10 which are provided with the usual heads. An encompassing cover or holder therefor, consisting of a sheet of cardboard or other heavy and foldable material, is provided and this sheet is folded in the usual manner to. form a lower front flap 12, a back 14 and an upper front flap 15, the flaps l2 and 15 being adapted to overlap and interengage as will be later described. The lower edges of the double card 11 are embraced between the lower flap 12 and the portion of the back opposite this flap, staples or fastening means 13 being provided and extending through the-flap 12, the edges of the card 11 and the back 1 of the cover or holder.
In accordance with my invention the match-igniting material 16 is provided upon the back of the folder and preferably upon the portion of the back located opposite the the pocket and a match may be withdrawn by pulling the flap 15 from behind the flap 12 and breaking the stem connection with the lower unslit end of its part of the match card. In order that the match may be ignited it is necessary to turn over the folder, thus disposing the back 14 of the folder between the match being struck and those re maining in the card.
The hand of the user may, when the striking surface is located as described, serve as a partial protection at least for the exposed matches near the side edges of the back, but whether the folder is held in position to permit such protection or not is more or less immaterial as the back itself is disposed in positionto guard against the ignition of matches within the folder cover.
It is thought, that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing without further description and it will be manifest that various changes may be made in the form of the folder and in the location of the striking or match-igniting surface without departing front the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A safety match folder comprising a sheet folded to provide a back and front overlapping flaps, said back being surfaced with match-igniting material throughout a portion of its outer face behind the lower front flap.
2. A safety match folder comprising a card of matches and a cover encompassing said card, saidcoverbeing folded to provide a back and overlapping front flaps, the outer face of said back being surfaced with matchigniting material;
3. A safety match folder comprising a card of matches and an encompassing cover therefor, said cover being folded to provide a back and overlapping front cover flaps, a portion of the outer face of said back remote from the exposed heads of the matches formingsaid card being surfaced with match-igniting material.
4. A safety match folder .comprising a card of matches and a cover encompassing said card, said cover being folded to provide a back and overlapping front flaps, the lower front flap and said back embracing the lower edge of said card, a portion of said back disposed opposite said lower flap being surfaced with match-igniting material.
5. A safety match folder comprising a card of matches and a protecting sheet secured at its lower edge to the lower edge of said card and extending upwardly behind said matches, said sheet being provided on its face behind said matches and remote from the exposed matches forming the card with a surface of match-igniting material.
