Description

prl 25, 1933 B. H. FREED-MAN MATCH PACKAGE Filed April 23, 1930 Patented- Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED sTnTlezsF BENJAMIN H. Il?IBIEEDINIIAIN, OIF-NEW' YOBK,N'. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 HUD'SN HOLIIIYIINTI.`
CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. G ORPORATION OF DELA.WABE l HATCH PACKAGEV Application filed April 23,
This invention relates to a match package of the book type, such as is shown 1n my co-pending application for patent, Serial No.
It is well known that in match packages of the book type in use at the present time, the abrasive strip used for the striking of the matches is located on the infolded end of the package wrapper on the front of the package. The location of this strip of .abrasive material is such `that a match can be struck regardless of whether the package is open or closed with the result that many accidents have occurred by inadvertent ignition of the entire package of matches, causing the manu-A before striking a match. Attempts have been made to devise improvements on the present day type of match book, such improvements consisting in placing the abrasive strip in various other positions on the package coveringand on the closure Hap. Many of these other constructions have been impractical by reason of the act that when the package is hastily thrust in the pocket, the cover iiap sometimes becomes inadvertently tucked behind the match strip, thus bringing the abrasive strip in actual contact with the match heads. A slight rubbing therefore, of the abrasive strip against the match heads can in such casel cause the entire package to be ignited in the pocket.'
The primary object therefore, of this invention is to provide a match book which will avoid the injurious possibilities heretofore mentioned and in which the abrasive strip isso positioned with regard to the matches in .the package that the same cannot under any man. serial No. 446,493.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a match package made in accordance .with my invention and showing the package in an open position;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the closedv package and Figure 3 is a plan view of the package showing the cover lap'distorted and demonstrating the possibility of the abrasive strip coming in contact with the match heads. Throughout the various views of the drawing, similar reference characters ydesignate similar parts. j
In the embodiment of my invention disclosed in the accompanying drawing, l indicates the elongated strip of paper from which the package covering is formed. This strip has one of its ends inturned to form a Hap 2 and this part 2 acts as a binding means for` holding the match strip 3 vwithin the package.
The match strip 3` isV held under the inturned iiap 2 by means of a wing 4 provided along one edge ofl the strip, which wing extends parallel to the axis of the strip 3 and projects from one of the sides thereof and lies beneath the inturned flap 2.-- 'i The `rfastening staple 5 lextends. through the flap 2, through the wing 4 on the match strip 3 and through the body portion l` of the paper covering, thus securelyholding the match strip 3 in position. Y
A supplemental fastening means for holding the match strip to the cover l consists of p an additional staple 6 whichxtends through the match strip and through the cover 1. This staple is located at right angles to the staple 5 andit passes through a narrow end portion 7 located along the` bases of the matches in the strip. The staple 6 is preferably located adjacent the side edge 8 of the match strip so that should the cover ap 9, which is formed as an integral part of the cover 1 become distorted andtucked behind the match strip, itcan not enter for any great from so doing by the staple 6.
The cover iap 9 is provided vvithan-abra-vv sive strip 10 which is located along one of its side edges. This abrasive striking strip 10 SeA i distance behind-said strip, being prevented A' I preferably begins at the transverse fold 11 formed in the cover member 1 and terminates at 12, leaving a space 13 between the termination ,12 of the strip 10 and the end 14 of the 5 cover 9. The reason Yfor terminating this striking strip short of the edge 14 will be apparent from the showing of Figure 3. Here it will be seen that the cover flap 9 has become distorted by'beindiagonally folded 1o on the line 15 so that the a rasive strip 10 has assumed a position substantially parallel to the matches in the strip. It will be here seen that since the strip 10 terminates at 12 and leaves a space 13 free of abrasive material, and
15 that said space 13 is located in. alignment with the match heads, no amount of distortion of p the cover flap can bring any. part of the strik ngdurface 10 in contact with the match ea l v- 2o It will be seen from the foregoing that I have devised a package affording absolute safety to the user. The position of the striking strip 10 vwith respect to the match heads is such that the cover flap 10 must be closed before a match is struck. When a match is struck, the iame'therefrom is located at a position remote from the match heads and thus cannot inadvertently ignite the matches 'ln thev package.` Additionall should the so cover lap become opened in t e pocket and folded over or distorted from its usual position, it willlbe seen that due to the location 4and form of the abrasive strip, it cannot under any circumstances contact with the match heads to cause a rubbing action and consequent ignition of the package.
Having described my invention, what I claim is: i A match ackage having a cover, a match 4o strip exten ing cross-wise on said cover and -havmg portions of the cover folded over it, the match strip beingsecured at two of its edges to the cover, with one of the secured edges lying at right angles to the other secured edge, a striking surface on the cover extending longitudinally of it, said surface having one of its narrower ends termlnating short ,of thefree end of the cover and being so proportioned that it cannot be so brought into contact with the heads ofthe matc es by the inadvertent angular folding Y of the cover.
