Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

-Be it known that I, AnoLPn BRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain newv and useful Improve ments in Match-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in matchbox holders of that class in which is provided a holder for inclosing the matchbox and having provision for sliding movement of the box for access' to the matches.

l The present invention has for its objects among'others to provide a simple and improved device' of this character having means for preventing accidental displacement of the matchbox, and to provide a cover or closure so constructed and arranged as to push out the match-containing portion .by the act of opening the cover.

I aim further at improvements in the details of construction whereby the inclosing ortion and cover are strengthened or reinforced and adapted to better serve the purpose for which they are designed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will e particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying, drawings, which, with the numerals ofreference marked thereon, form a part of this-specification and in WhlCh-- Figure 1 is a substantially central longitudinal section through a holder embodying my invention, with the matchbox therein. Fig. 2 is an end elevation with a portion broken away and part in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken as on the line 33 of F i 2. Fig. 4 is a view of the blank from whic the top is formed. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the holder proper is constructed.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the difl'erent views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the blank from which the holder proper is constructed. It has a substantially central longitudinal opening 2, a tongue or tab 3 centrally disposed and the bendable lugs 4 upon oppositesides adjacent the edges.

Along or at one side upon opposite sides of the central portion there are stamped out the tongues 5 for a purpose which Wlll soon be made apparent. This blank is bent along the dotted linesv 6-6 to construct an oblong holder of which the-central portion 7 of the blank forms one side or rather a bottom and the two portions 8 and 9 of the blank form the opposite sides. When thus formed, the lugs 4, 4 are bent over, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, to engage the adjacent side 10 of the inclosing portion of the matchbox so as to prevent accldental-displacement thereof when the sliding portion 11 of said box is moved. The tongue or tab 3 is bent up at right angles to the bottom, as seen in Fig. 2, see also Fig. l, which forms a stop for the inward movement of the inclosing portion of the matchbox, as seen in Fig. l, as well as a stop to limit the movement of the pusher-tongue on the cover, as will be soon explained.

12 represents the blank from which the cover portion is formed. It comprises the central portion 13 which forms the top proper and the two side portions 14 which form the inclosing sides of the cover when the blank 13 is bent along the dotted lines 15 seen in Fig. 4. The central portion is provided with a lip 16 at one end which is designed to be bent down along the dotted line 17 to form a depending portion, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The members 14 are provided with openings 18, as seen in Fig. 4, through which the tongues 5 are passed and then bent over, as seen in Fig. 2, to form the pivots or fulcrnms' on which the cover portion is movable. One of the members 14 is provided with an opening 19 designed to constitute a cigar cutter. The central por-' tion of the blank 13 opposite the lip 16 is formed with an extension or lug 20 and upon opposite sides thereof with the tongues 21. The tongue 20 is designed to be bent along the line 22 and the lugs 21 are designed to be bent along the dotted lines 23 seen in Fig; 4. These, when bent along the lines 23, form the depending wings or wind-guard, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the tongue 20 being beaded or rolled, as shown at 24, to form a finger hold by which the cover may be easily manipulated. The blank 13 upon opposite sides of the tongue 16 is formed with the wings 25 which are designed to be bent along the lines 26 shown dotted in Fig. 4 and are, in turn, provided with the extensions 27 designed to be bent angularly along the dotted lines 28 seen in Fig. 4 to form reinforces for the eeann:

3, in any well known way. The free ends of the wings are rolled or turned, as seen at 31 in Figs. 1 and 2, to form a rounded surface for contact with the end 32 of the sliding portion of the matchbox, as seen best in Fig. 1. v

The parts are shown in operative relation in Fig. .1 wherein it will be seen that the wings 25 are designed as the cover is moved upon its pivots to pass through the opening 33 in that end of the holder above the extension 3, and with its rounded end engaging the end 22 of the movable portion of the matchbox constitutes a pusher by which said sliding portion is moved outward by the movement of the cover portion in the direction of the arrow seen in Fig. 1. \Vhen the sliding portion is pushed back, the end 22- engaging the free end or the pusher, serves to restore the cover to its closed position. The opening 2 serves to disclose the matchscratching portion of the matchbox common in such devices. The upturned end portion 3 serves as a stop to limit the movement of the pusher, as will be readily understood upon reference to Fig. 1.

Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing fromthespirit of the invention or, sacrificing any of its advantages.

2. The combination with a match box holder, of a cover therefor having a pushertongue movable withln the holder to move a portion of the, box, said tongue compr sing two Wings connected at their adjacent edges and terminating in a box contacting end.

3. The combination with a match box holder, of a pivoted cover therefor formed of a blank bent longitudinally to form atop section and side sections, a lip or extension depending from one end of the top section, and wings integral with the side sections, said wings being bent and connected at their adjacent side edges to .form a pusher tongue the free end of which is roiled to constitute a box contacting portion.
