WILLIAM H. HOB-N, F HYDE. PARK, NEW YORK.
MATCH-'IBOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Application filed May 16, 1911. Serial No. 627,476.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TILLIAM H. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match boxes and has for its leading object the provision of an improved match box of the portable or pocket type which may be readily secured to the stem of an ordinary p It further object of my invention is the provision of an improved match box for the use of those smoking a pipe which will support the matches on the stem of the pipe where they may be easily gotten at and readily scratched to light the pipe with one hand while the other hand is employed as a shield to protect the match from being blown out by the wind.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an improved portable match box which may be readily moved to open the same to permit of the withdrawal of a match and which will automatically close when released to prevent the losing out of the matches.
Other objects and advantages of my improved match box will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of the claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pipe equipped with my match box. Fig. 2 represents a similar view in open position. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the match box, and Fig. 1 represents an end view of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bowl of a pipe of ordinary construction such as a brier, having formed integral therewith the stem 2 formed at its end with a socket to receive the reduced threaded end of the mouth piece 3 of the pipe.
Mounted upon the stem 2 of the pipe is the bottom at of my improved match box, said bottom being formed with the integral depending ear 5 at one end having a central aperture 6 through which the reduced portion of the mouth piece is passed, when said mouth piece is screwed into position its shoulder bearing against the ear to firmly retain this end of the casing 7 of the match box in posit-ion, the. casing 7 being preferably formed integral with the bottom 4. Projecting from the opposite end of the bottom 4 is the integrally formed plate 8 of curvature to fit partially around the stem 2 of the pipe, an adjustable flexible band 9 passing around the stem and being secured to said plate 8 to secure the same and thus the forward end of the match box casing in position.
Extending forward from the bottom 4 beyond the curved portion 8 and rounding upward are the spaced flanges 9 which form a guide for the depending lug 10 at the forward end of the match box proper 11 said forward end of the box being closed while the opposite end of the said box 11 is cut away to provide the guide flanges 12 for the projecting lip 13 on which the matches rest. A flattened helical spring 14 is inserted beneath the inturned portions of the flanges 9 and bears at one end against the box casing 7 and at the other end against the depending lug 10 to resist rearward movement of the box 11 and normally force the box forward.
Hingedly secured to the rear end of the base 4: by the hinge pin 15 is the end section 16 which forms a closure for the case 7, a spring 17 having one end secured to the base 4 and the other end bearing against the door 16 to force said door into closed position.
In the use of my improved match box it is merely necessary to press the forward end of the box 11 rearwardly, when the lip 13 will bear against the inner face of the door 16 and will cam the same downward into open position to allow the lip to project rearwardly from the casing 7 where a match may be readily withdrawn. Upon the releasing of the box the spring 1 1 will shift the same into position where its cutaway end will be contained within and protected by the casing 7, while the spring 17 will close the door 16 and the matches within the box 11 will be entirely protected. The casing 7 may either be corrugated or roughened at the sides or may have a layer of suitable material 18 secured thereon against which the matches may be scratched the matches thus being lighted against the bowl of the pipe and the remaining matches in the box being protected from accidental lighting thereof.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings the construction of my improved match box will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, practical and efficient match box which may be readily secured upon an ordinary pipe stem and which will commend itself to smokers as a highly desirableand extremely convenient article.
I claim:
An attachment for pipes, comprising a casing having a depending ear for engagement between the end of the pipe stem and the shoulder of the mouth piece, a match box slidably mounted in the casing, a slotted tubular guide member projecting forward from the casing, a spring mounted in the casing in the tubular member, a depending lug carried by the box and projecting through the slot into engagement with the spring, the spring resisting the open movement of the box, and a spring pressed closure for normally closing the inner end of the casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM H. HORN. WVitnesses:
EDWARD C. RnIss, HAZEL L. BRITTAIN.
