Be it known that I, EDWARD SHAW, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of one side of a lainp top with my improvement thrown off-from the cone and flame.

It is well known that when lamps which consume kerosene and other coal oils are blown out smoke rises through the chimney, and that this smoke has an otl'ensive and disagreeable odor.- Moreover, when the lamp is extinguished by blowing down into the chimney from the top, it has frequently happened that the flame, being thrown downward by the breath, has ignited the oil, and thus caused explosion, accident, and injury. My invention has in view to prevent such accident and to overcome such objection, as wellns to provide a quick and convenient method of extinguishing lamps of this kind, viz, kerosene or coal-oil lamps having a burner of the general description delineated in the drawing.

This extinguisher is attached at the sides of the lamp top through holes made for the reception of the ends, and so that the ends can turn therein as the extinguisher is moved over or oil from the wick. (See 01 d.) 0) shows also a small thumb-piece or handle by which the extinguisher is turned. Another mode in which I contemplate the application of my invention, is to have the holes for the reception of the two wires of the extinguisher lower down on the lamp top, in the concave portion thereof, as h h. This can be easily done by making the narrow parts of the extinguisher, or those made in wire form, pass down through that part of the top whercon rests the chimney, through some of the airholes there found in all tops of this kind, and, if necessary, enlarging said hole or holes a little.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The curved extinguisher for lamps of the kind described, when constructed and applied as and for the purpose set forth.
