Description

J. K. MENTZER..
Lamp Extinguisher.
Patented Dec. 21,1869.
- z-wm/h K waited fitatea pend dfljiine.
Letters Patent N 98,083, dated December 21, 1869.
LAMP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, JACOB K. Mnx'rznn, of New Holland, in the county ot'Lauc-astcr, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improvement on Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of a single metallic piece, moving on a pivot, for the purpose of extinguishing a lamp when the wick is turned down, by simply. touching the projecting foot, and pushing it to one side, which brings its upper end directly over the burner, and not only extinguishes the lamp eii'cctually, but cuts off the smoke, and prevents the evaporation of oil, and the unpleasant smell produced when extinguished by blowing out, as well as preventing all liability to explosion that may be induced by such blowing out, and for which purposes numerous complicated devices have been patented.
Figure 1 is a section of a lamp-chimney and burner,
illustrating my simple extinguisher as applied to a sun burner, or patent No. 40,226, as made by the manufacturing company of Holmes, Booth & Atwood, reissue No, 3,019, J nne 30, 1868.
Figure 2, a perspective view of certain portions of the same,
Figure 3 shows the strip of. brass or other metal forming the extinguisher.
A, the covering-plate.
a, the part to be bentdown at right angles, as indicated by the dotted lines, as shown by Figure 4, the stem. B, in this case, bent so as to adapt it to the convex perforated chimney-holder D, and is movable on a pivot, Z), secured through one of the perforations in the dome or support D.
The lower end of the extinguisher is passed through an elongated slot (in which it can be moved) inside the notice, out of the way, and a 'slight movement will- I am aware that lamp-extinguishers are not new, as I I find eight patents granted in 1867, in which cams, cranks, andother complicated devices are employed, too expensive for general adoption; as, also, two at plates, with springs, that, by thumb-pieces, will meet over the burner by a. pressure.
I am also aware, that in patent No. 65,696, a strip of metal, bent to fit the cone, is hinged on two sides, so as to swing up and cover the flame-slot, all of which I disclaim; but my device operates under the cone or flame-slot, directly over the burner, (where it should be, to perform its oflice properly.)
I am not aware that an extinguisher, made of a singlepiece, and held by a single pivot, was ever before known or used in direct contact with the orifice of the burner or otherwise. Therefore,
Unit I claim, is
' A lamp-extinguisher, A B E, aflixed by a pivot, b, and operated so as to cover the top of the burner c, in the manner and for the. purpose specified.
