Description
@ initeh titans eteniffi JOHN CALDWELL, OF PROVIQENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Leftcrs Patent .No. 74,988, dated lljfarch 3, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Be it known that I, JOHN CALDWELL, of Providence, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Combined Lamp and Lantern, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure represents a perspective view of-my combined lamp and lantern.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on a reduced scale; and
Figure 3 is a section of the lantern-frame.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructio and adapting a lantern-frame that it can be readily nppli ed'to a fluid-burning lamp, and so that the chimne of the lamp will serve as the glass for the lantern.
My invention is shown as particularly applied to what is known asthc sun-burner lamp, although it may be equally applicable to other lamps, where a similar form of chimney to that shown is used, the same being made cylindrical fora greater portion of its length, and tapering at the top.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a lamp provided with a burner, b, of the kind known as the sunburner."v c is the glass chimney, which is of a cylindrical shape for at great portion of its length, and tapers ofi' at the top. as cl represent the several pnrts of a lantern-frame The lower portion, consisting of the casing e, fits over the lamp, and is secured to the same by means of springs or catchesf, as shown in fig. 2, or
in any other suitable manner, so that it can be readily attached to and detached from the lamp. The upper portion, 2, of the lantern i'rame fits snugly over the top of the chimney c, and is provided, on its inner side, with a circular concave frame, 'e, as shown in fig. 3, and formed of thin sheet metal, having slits cut around its sides, so as to form springs, which fit over the top'of the chimney, and, adapting themselves to the varying sizes of the chimneys, serve to hold the same securely in position. The means of attachment may be very readily adapted to the lamp or the lantcrn frame, and thelnmp itself can-be used in the ordinary manner.
The frame, consistingof the portions c e (Z, may be putaway, except when required for use. W! n a lantern is required, the frame can at once be fitted upon the lamp, and the glass, being already provided, an excellent, convenient, and portable lantern is at once produced.
The upper portion, at, of the lantern-frame is so constructed'as to prevent any direct downward draught, while allowing of a free escape for the smoke or products of combustion.
What I elaim'ns new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'.lhe combination of a lantern-frame, e e d, constructed us'described, with a lamp, a, and chimney, c, in such a manner that the frame may be'readily fitted to the lamp, and -the chimney will form the glass of the lantern, substantially as set forth.
Intestimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
V JOHN CALDWELL.
