Description

T. LANG'STON.
Lantern.
Patented March 16, 1869.
N. PETERS, Pholo-Lhhngmphgr, Washington. D. c,
THOMAS LANGSTON, OF BROOKLYN, YORK. Letters Patent No. 87,857, dated mm 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
The Schedule referred-to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, THOMAS Lmcscron, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a 'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
forming part of this specification, in which the drawing represents a side view of a lantern having my improvement, a portion of the bottom being broken away, to more clearly exhibit the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of the invention consists in attaching the sheet metal bottom, which holds the lamp, to that part of the frame containing the glass, by means of a screw-thread and flange formed in the cylindrical bot-- the lamp to the same.
The bottom is, further, provided with a flange, d, of
sheetmetal, which flange has a vertical part, 1;, formed with a screw-thread, by swaging, stamping, or other equivalent means.
This thread fits within a hollow thread formed in a similar manner in the base-ring, or band a, which is connected with the top, 0, by thebars, or guards b, as
shown, thus forming a lantern-frame, for containing the glass, B, the upper end of which fits into the top, 0, the lower end being enclosed by the base-band e, and held in'place by the flange a, when the bottom, A, is screwed in.
When, for any cause, a new glass is-to be substituted, the bottom, A, is unscrewed, the frame inverted, and the glass placed in. The bottom beingthen screwed in, the glass is kept firmly in place, being held by the flange a.
In practice, the flange a and threaded part 0 form one continuous piece, being swaged out, and soldered on to the bottom, A.
d-is the ring, or handle of the lantern.
I am aware that the lamps of lanterns have been formed with screw-threads, for the purpose of attaching them to the base, or bottom, A, of the lanterns, and desire to be understood as not claiming the screwthread so broadly as to cover such device, being desirous only of protecting the construction as described.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent Providing the base, A, with a right-angular flange, a a, for supporting the glass, B, the flange 0 being provided with a screw-thread, adapted to fit into the screwthreaded' flange e, attached to the wires b, all arranged "as described, whereby the glass is supported upon the horizontal flange a, and held against lateral play by the horizontal flange of the part c, as herein set forth.
. THOMAS LALNGSTON. Witnesses WM. F. MCNAMABA, ALEX. F. Ronnnrs.
