vTo all whom it may concern:
will enable others skilled in the alt to make and use the' same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of our improved lantern.

The invention consists, rst, in forming an eye, a, :tt the upper end of oneof the upright guard-wires, A, so that the same may be fitted through an aperture of the cap 1i, to receive a bolt or hook, C, which is pivoted or arranged on the (rap. The cap is hinged to the upper guard-ring at l), and is thus, by the afbresaid connection u C, locked to the guard. The eye a,
it will be noticed, projects above the upper guard-ring D. '.lhe globe E, can, when the cap is swung open, be removed or inserted from above. lhe lantern becomes more durable and convenient when so made, that the guard is fastened to the base ofthe lantern.
The invention consists, also, in making the upper guard-ring I) of sheetmetal, in form of an annular" trough, as in g. 3.
The upright guard-wires can thereby be better secured to the upper ring than they could be to the ordinary wire ring, as their ends are fitted into the trough, and receive a. solder, or other head within the same.
The lower ends of the upright wires are secured to a horizontal ange, o, of the base.
Having thus described our invention,
