UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, 7
HUGH SANGSTER AND JAS. sANes'rER, or BUFFALO, NEWYYORKU LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,154, dated June 10, 1851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HUGH SANGSTER and JAMES SANGSTER, of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Mode of Constructing Lanterns, of which the following description, taken in connection Withthe accompanying drawings andreferences, is sufficiently clearand comprehensive to enable others of competent skillto make and use our invention: p p
The naturelof our improvement consists in providing thelamp with two springs, each attached to its upper part (one opposite the other,) and extending down nearly to the base of the lamp, when each forms an elbow thence passing under the lamp and terminating immediatelybelow it, so as to permit the,
lamp to be removed from the lantern with ease and facility by pressing horizontally upon the springs.
Figure 1, is a semi-perspective view of the whole lantern. Fig. 2 is a semi-perspective vertical section. Fig. 3 isa bottom view looking upward.
A, is theglass, B, the cap, and C, the ring A i or bail bywhich the lantern is carried. The
glass is set in the case or frame D, Which incloses the lamp F, and the burners H.
This frame or case has a circular flange E,
rest upon the flange and thus secure the,
lamp in this position. Upon" pressing the knobs L toward each other the springs will be brought in contact with the sides of the rapidity and case, while it is rendered at the lamp and permit it to be removed with same time perfectly secure from being accidently disengaged.
What We claim as our invention and .de-
sire to secure by Letters Patent is Themode of attaching the lamp to the lantern by means of the springs andflanges as herein substantially set forth.
HUGH SANGSTER. I JAMES SANGSTER. WVitnesses:
