Description
J. SUTTON.
Lamp.
Patented April .11, I848.
' UNIT STATES PATENT orriou.
JACKSON SUTTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,506, dated April 11, 1848.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoKsoN SUTTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp.
The nature of my invention consists, in combining the common lamp, a lantern, and nurse lamp, in one lamp.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will with reference to the accompanying drawings describe its construction, and operation.
Iv make my lamp, so as to be contained in a socket, similar to that of the common candlestick. The lamp, is so constructed, as to slide up and down in said socket, and is held in the desired place by a spring or otherwise.-
Attached to the top of the socket, A, Figure 1, is a cylinder B, Fig. 1 of tin, or other metal, one half of its surface, more or less, being metal, and the balance of mica, glass, or any other transparent substance. A sliding door C Fig. 3 in .said cylinder, runs or slides half way around, which when shutover the glass, makes my lamp a dark lantern. My lamp can ,bemade with glass all around, and thus answer for a common lantern.
The top D or cover to the cylinder, may be made of tin or other metal, and should have holes, or orifices, in it, to let out the smoke. This top D is made movable so that a dish in small boiler E lfiig'. 3 can be set upon its place, making my lamp also serve instead of the common nurselamp.
lVhen my lamp is needed for common purposes, as F Fig 1, the small conical cover G on the top of the cylinder is removed, and permitted to hang by its chains and the lamp is raised in the socket until its top, is as high as the top of the cylinder B.
I do not claim raisingthe lamp so that its wick tubes shall be above the lantern to serve the purpose of a common lamp, but
I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent? The arrangement of the lamp in combination with the lantern, for said purpose, said lamp, being in a socket beneath the lantern frame, by which contrivance, the slit is made in the socket and not in the body of the lam tern as in other cases.
J AGKSON SUTTON.
