Letters Patent No. 104,898, dated June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADE HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Oonsnnws S1. J 01m, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-shade Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
.clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is'a side view of my improved lamp-shade holder, showing the shade in section.
Figure 2 is a top view of the holder.
Figure 3 is a top view of the shade.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved lamp-shade holder, simple in construction, easily attached to and detached from the lamp, and which shall be so arranged as to allow the shade to be expanded or contracted at will and It consists in the holder constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the upright of the holder, to the upper" part of which is attached a ring, B, of a little larger diameter than the ring Din the upper part of the shade O. The upright A is formed by bending a wire at'lor near its middle part, so that its two parts may be parallel with each other. The lower parts of the upright A are secured to each other by a ring, band, solder, or other convenient means, .and are then bent-inward at right angles. After extending inward for a suitable distance, the said parts are separated, to form a loop, E, to pass around and embrace the neck of the lamp. The ends of the wire are then bent back to' their former direction, and extend parallel with each other for a short distance. bent inward, and has a hook, F, formed upon its end to hook upon the end of the other part, to secure the holder to the neck of the lamp.
The shade O is formed by laying the paper out of which it is made in 'plaits, and passing a ring, D, through its upper part, as shown in figs. 1 and 3.
To the ring D is secured a loop, G, the inner end of which is so formed as to fit'npon the upright A.
The outer end of the loop G extends outward, to serve as a handle for adjusting, attaching, and removing the .shade. By this construction, by raising and lowering the shade 0 upon the ring B, the said shade will be contracted or expanded, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure Patent- 1. The holder A B E'F, constructed and operating ,Dne of the ends is then.
