Be it known `that I, FERDINAND M. CARNES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New ,.York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full; clear, and exact description of theV construetion' and operation of the same, reference being had to the-annexed drawings making a partof this specitioation and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. i

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a central vertical section of my invention. Fignreflris a top view of the same. y f My invention relates to means for preventing the escape f the steam from kettles, boilers, Sac., into the room, and consists in -the construction and novel ar- 4 rangement of devices, whereby the steam is conducted into the h'rebelowthe kettle and consumed.

The letter A of the drawings designates my kettle,

provided at its base with a anch, b, bent outward and downward in such a manner that the kettle will be supported upon it, and will not` close the pot-holc of the stove. i

C.' designates the cover of my kettle, from the top of i which proceeds the bent pipe d, whose end is inserted y yinto the pipe G, forming a tight joint, upon which the cover'is arranged to, swingr from side to side.

h represents a small clamp, by which the cover is fastened to the kettle 4when exactly over the mouth thereof.

While the movement and use ot' the cover is not in the least impeded, the steam generated within, when the cover is`closed, will pass freelythrough the pipes down into the fire. `The kettle is as useful and. con venient as though the pipe were not attached thereto, while it possesses the great advantage of never emitting the steam into the room.

Sometimes I prefer to curve the pipe d inlthe form' of a bow, thereby presenting no angular obstruction to the passage of the steam. l

The boiler herein described, providedv with a supporting-anch, b, around its base, external descending pipe G, and cover C, having bent pipe d, connecting with the pipe G, and forming therewith a steam-tight pivot-joint, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
